Stochastic RSI Heat Bollinger Bands
Oct 30, 2021

The Stochastic RSI Heat Bollinger Bands indicator combines the volatility tracking of Bollinger Bands with the momentum analysis of the Stochastic RSI to provide a visual "heat map" of market conditions directly on the price chart. By dynamically coloring the bands and the basis line according to momentum exhaustion or strength, it helps traders identify overextended price levels and potential trend reversals in real-time.
Usage
The tool is primarily used to identify overbought and oversold conditions within the context of price volatility. The bands are colored using a gradient derived from the average of the Stochastic RSI K and D lines (or optionally the RSI itself). By default, a green hue indicates overbought momentum while a red hue indicates oversold momentum.
Traders can use the indicator in several ways:
- Trend Exhaustion: When the bands turn deep green or red, it signals that the current price move may be overextended.
- Support and Resistance: The Bollinger Bands act as dynamic barriers, while the heat coloring provides context on whether a touch of the band is likely to result in a bounce or a breakout.
- Screener Analysis: An on-chart dashboard displays real-time values for K, D, and RSI, providing a clear text-based status of the current momentum state.
- Customized Visuals: The bands can be disabled to transform the indicator into a colored moving average, or the color logic can be inverted to suit different trading styles.
Details
The indicator calculates a standard Bollinger Band set using a selectable moving average type (SMA, EMA, SMMA, WMA, or VWMA). Simultaneously, it computes the Stochastic RSI. The "heat" value is derived from the average of the K and D lines, which is then mapped to an RGB color gradient. This gradient is applied to the upper band, lower band, basis line, and the background fill between the bands. The screener logic evaluates the current Stochastic RSI and RSI levels against standard thresholds (80/20 for Stoch RSI and 70/30 for RSI) to categorize the market state.
Settings
Options
- Show Screener: Toggles the visibility of the on-chart data table.
- Invert colors: Swaps the overbought and oversold color assignments.
- Color Source: Selects whether the heat gradient is driven by the Stochastic RSI or the standard RSI.
- Fill Bollinger bands with heat: Toggles the background color fill between the upper and lower bands.
- Show upper and lower lines: Enables or disables the outer Bollinger Band lines.
- Color upper and lower bands with heat: Applies the gradient color to the outer lines.
- Color basis line with heat: Applies the gradient color to the middle moving average line.
Bollinger Bands
- Length: The lookback period for the basis line and standard deviation calculation.
- Source: The price input used for calculations (e.g., Close).
- StdDev: The multiplier for the standard deviation bands.
- Offset: Shifts the bands forward or backward in time.
- Moving average type: Choose between SMA, EMA, SMMA, WMA, or VWMA for the basis line.
Stochastic RSI
- Show overbought/oversold diamonds: Toggles visual markers at the top of the chart when momentum is overextended.
- K/D: Smoothing periods for the Stochastic %K and %D lines.
- RSI Length: The lookback period for the underlying RSI.
- Stochastic Length: The lookback period for the Stochastic calculation.
- RSI Source: The price input used specifically for the RSI calculation.
FAQ
How do I interpret the colors on the bands?
The colors represent the momentum intensity; by default, red signifies oversold conditions and green signifies overbought conditions, allowing you to see momentum strength without looking at a separate oscillator pane.
Can I use this for trend following instead of reversals?
Yes, by changing the "Moving average type" to a faster EMA or VWMA and focusing on the basis line color, you can use the heat transitions to identify shifts in trend momentum.
