The Tillson T3 indicator provides a smoothed moving average designed to reduce lag and overshooting while remaining responsive to market trends.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify market trends and potential entry points. The indicator functions similarly to a traditional moving average but with enhanced smoothing and reduced lag.

  • Trend Identification: When the price action remains above the T3 line and the indicator is sloping upward, a bullish trend is indicated. Conversely, when the price remains below the T3 line and the indicator is sloping downward, a bearish trend is active.
  • Support and Resistance: In a trending market, the T3 line often acts as dynamic support or resistance. Traders can look for "with-trend" entries when the price pulls back to the T3 line before resuming its primary direction.
  • Crossover Signals: Users can enable a second "Fibonacci Ratio" T3 line in the settings. This allows for crossover strategies: a "Golden Cross" (the fast T3 crossing above the slow T3) suggests a bullish entry, while a "Death Cross" (the fast T3 crossing below the slow T3) suggests a bearish entry.
  • Trend Reversals: A confirmed penetration of the T3 line by the price action, without an immediate reversal, often serves as an early warning that a trend may be ending.

Details

Developed by Tim Tillson, the T3 Moving Average is calculated as a weighted sum of a single, double, triple, quadruple, quintuple, and sextuple Exponential Moving Average (EMA). This multi-stage smoothing technique allows the indicator to track price movements more gradually than a standard EMA, reducing the "noise" found in ranging markets while maintaining a tighter fit to the price during established trends.

The calculation utilizes a "Volume Factor" (also known as the multiplier), which controls how responsive the moving average is to price changes. A higher volume factor makes the indicator more reactive but potentially more prone to overshooting during sharp volatility.

Settings

  • Show T3 Fibonacci Ratio Line?: Toggles the visibility of a second T3 line calculated using Fibonacci-based parameters (Length 5, Volume Factor 0.618).
  • T3 Length: Determines the lookback period for the primary T3 calculation.
  • Volume Factor: Adjusts the smoothing multiplier for the primary T3 line. Higher values increase responsiveness.
  • T3 Length fibo: Sets the lookback period for the optional second T3 line.
  • Volume Factor fibo: Adjusts the smoothing multiplier for the optional second T3 line.

FAQ

How do I interpret the color changes on the T3 line? The line changes color based on its slope. A green line indicates the T3 is increasing (bullish momentum), while a red line indicates it is decreasing (bearish momentum).

What is the advantage of using T3 over a standard EMA? The T3 uses a sophisticated smoothing formula that incorporates multiple EMAs, resulting in a curve that has significantly less lag and fewer false signals in sideways markets compared to a standard EMA.
