SMMA Analyses - Buy / Sell signals and close position signals
Apr 1, 2018

The SMMA Analyses indicator provides a comprehensive framework for identifying potential trend entry and exit points using Dual Smoothed Moving Averages (SMMA).
Usage
The SMMA Analyses tool is designed to assist traders in identifying trend shifts and potential exhaustion points. The primary logic is divided into two categories of signals:
- Entry Signals (Open Trade): These are triggered by the interaction between the Fast and Slow SMMA.
- Buy Signal (B): Occurs when the Fast SMMA crosses above the Slow SMMA, indicating a bullish trend shift. This is highlighted with a green background and a "B" label.
- Sell Signal (S): Occurs when the Fast SMMA crosses below the Slow SMMA, indicating a bearish trend shift. This is highlighted with a red background and an "S" label.
- Exit Signals (Close Trade): These use the relationship between the price and the Fast SMMA to suggest when a trend might be losing momentum.
- Close Buy: Triggered when the price crosses below the Fast SMMA while the overall trend remains bullish (Fast > Slow). It is indicated by a light green background.
- Close Sell: Triggered when the price crosses above the Fast SMMA while the overall trend remains bearish (Fast < Slow). It is indicated by a light red background.
Traders should use these signals as analytical triggers rather than automated execution points, paying close attention to price action around support and resistance levels.
Details
The indicator utilizes a custom Smoothed Moving Average (SMMA) calculation. Unlike a standard Simple Moving Average, the SMMA gives a smoother output by incorporating previous values into its calculation, effectively reducing "noise" from market volatility.
The tool specifically monitors:
- Trend Confirmation: Derived from the crossover of two SMMA periods.
- Momentum Exhaustion: Derived from the price crossing the shorter-period SMMA, which often serves as a dynamic trailing exit level.
Settings
- Fast SMMA Period: Determines the lookback period for the shorter, more reactive SMMA. Default is 20.
- Slow SMMA Period: Determines the lookback period for the longer, trend-defining SMMA. Default is 100.
FAQ
How do I interpret the "Close" background signals?
The light green or light red backgrounds indicate that the price has crossed the Fast SMMA against the prevailing trend direction. This suggests the current move may be weakening and could serve as a signal to secure profits or tighten stop-losses.
Can I change the sensitivity of the signals?
Yes, by adjusting the Fast and Slow SMMA periods in the settings, you can make the indicator more reactive to price changes (shorter periods) or more focused on long-term trends (longer periods).
How can I get access to SMMA Analyses?
You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
