The Regression Trend Reversal Signals & Forecasts indicator provides a comprehensive trend and reversal framework by combining multiple regression methodologies into a single analytical tool. It enables traders to estimate the underlying price path using various statistical engines while identifying potential market extremes through adaptive volatility bands.

Usage

The script is designed for both trend following and reversal identification. Its application depends primarily on the selected regression engine:

  • Trend Identification: Use the central regression line as a directional reference. A rising line (typically colored green) indicates bullish momentum, while a falling line (colored red) suggests bearish conditions.
  • Reversal Scouting: Monitor the dynamic bands. When price extends beyond the upper or lower boundaries and shows rejection (marked by diamond icons), it indicates a potential mean-reversion opportunity.
  • Trend Flips: Large arrow markers signal when the regression slope changes direction, confirming a shift in the primary trend structure.
  • Forecasting: The forecast projection extends the current slope into future bars, providing a visual estimate of where price may travel if the current trend persists.

Details

The indicator utilizes several distinct mathematical models to calculate the trend:

  • Theil-Sen Regression: A robust method that calculates the median slope of all point pairs, making it highly resistant to outliers and price spikes.
  • LOESS & Nadaraya-Watson: Localized smoothing techniques that apply higher weights to nearby observations for a flexible, curved trend line.
  • Kalman Filter: A recursive algorithm that updates its state with every new data point, balancing "process noise" and "measurement noise" for real-time adaptation.
  • Polynomial Regression: Fits a curved model (up to the 3rd degree) to capture non-linear market movements like S-curves or parabolic shifts.
  • Deviation Bands: Unlike fixed-width channels, these bands use the standard deviation of the distance between price and the regression line, automatically expanding during high volatility.

Settings

Method & Window

  • Source: The price data used for calculations (default is Close).
  • Method: Selects the regression engine (Linear, Theil-Sen, LOESS, Kalman, Polynomial, or Nadaraya-Watson).
  • Window Length: The lookback period for the regression (not applicable to Kalman).

Smoothing / Polynomial / Kalman

  • Smoothness: Adjusts the bandwidth for LOESS and Nadaraya-Watson; higher values create a smoother curve.
  • Degree: Sets the complexity of the Polynomial curve (1-3).
  • Process/Measurement Noise: Specific settings for the Kalman Filter to control responsiveness versus lag.

Forecast & Appearance

  • Show Forecast: Toggles the forward-projected slope and bands.
  • Forecast Bars: Determines how many bars into the future the projection extends.
  • Show Bands: Toggles the standard deviation channel.
  • Bullish/Bearish Color: Customizes the visual theme for trend directions.

FAQ

How do I interpret the diamond reversal signals?

The diamond signals appear when the price exceeds the outer bands and then prints a candle rejecting that extreme. These are intended to highlight overextended conditions where a reversal is statistically more likely.

Which regression method is best for volatile markets?

Theil-Sen Regression is often preferred for volatile markets because it uses median slopes, meaning it is less skewed by sudden, erratic price spikes compared to standard Linear Regression.
