The Volatility Adjusted Cloud indicator provides a dynamic market overlay that adapts to shifting volatility by combining a Variable Index Dynamic Average (VIDYA) midline with asymmetric, volatility-scaled deviation bands. It aims to help traders identify trend transitions and momentum expansion by adjusting its sensitivity based on current market dispersion.

Usage

The Volatility Adjusted Cloud is used to identify trend direction and potential breakout or breakdown zones. The primary components function as follows:

  • Trend Identification: A bullish state is triggered when the price crosses above the upper band, turning the cloud, candles, and midline to the bullish color. Conversely, a bearish state is triggered when the price crosses below the lower band.
  • Momentum Expansion: Long signals are generated upon a cross above the upper band, while Short signals are generated upon a cross below the lower band.
  • Dynamic Support/Resistance: The VIDYA midline serves as a central reference point. Price remaining above the midline during a bullish cloud state suggests trend continuation.
  • Clean View: For users seeking a minimal setup, the "Midline Only" mode hides the bands and cloud, providing a gradient-filled VIDYA line relative to the price.

Details

The indicator relies on the Variable Index Dynamic Average (VIDYA), which adjusts its smoothing constant based on the ratio of short-term to long-term standard deviation. This ensures the average accelerates during high-volatility trends and slows during consolidation. The midline is further refined using an ALMA smoothing pass for visual clarity.

The surrounding bands are calculated using a VIDYA-smoothed deviation from the midline. Because market volatility is often directional, the indicator utilizes asymmetric multipliers, allowing the upper and lower bands to be tuned independently to account for price skew.

Settings

Indicator Settings

  • Source: Specifies the price data used for all calculations (e.g., Close, Open).
  • Midline Only: When enabled, the indicator removes the bands and cloud, displaying only the VIDYA midline.

VA Cloud

  • VIDYA Length: The lookback period used for the core VIDYA calculation.
  • SD History Length: The lookback period for the standard deviation history used to determine the VIDYA smoothing constant.
  • + Multiplier: Adjusts the sensitivity of the upper volatility band.
  • - Multiplier: Adjusts the sensitivity of the lower volatility band.
  • Cloud Transparency: Controls the opacity of the fill between the upper and lower bands.

Colors

  • Custom Color Palette: Selection of predefined color schemes (Classic, Mystic, Accented, Royal).
  • Use Custom Palette: Enables manual selection of colors for bullish and bearish states.

FAQ

How do I interpret the signals?

Long signals appear when the price breaks above the upper volatility band, indicating bullish momentum. Short signals appear when the price breaks below the lower band, indicating bearish momentum.

Can I adjust the bands for asymmetric markets?

Yes, you can independently adjust the "+ Multiplier" and "- Multiplier" in the settings to account for instruments that exhibit different volatility characteristics in uptrends versus downtrends.
