The Choppiness Index and RSI indicator combines trend volatility and momentum oscillators to help traders distinguish between trending and sideways market conditions.

Usage

The tool is primarily used to identify when a market is entering a high-momentum trend versus when it is consolidating. Traders can interpret the interaction between the two components as follows:

  • Relationship Interpretation: When the RSI is greater than the Choppiness Index, the bars are colored green (or blue based on your theme), suggesting a stronger directional presence. Conversely, when the Choppiness Index is higher than the RSI, the bars are colored red, indicating a lack of trend or increased consolidation.
  • Choppiness Index (CHOP) Levels:
    • Low (Below 38.2): Indicates a strong directional trend is in place.
    • Mid (38.2 - 61.8): Indicates a neutral or transitioning state.
    • High (Above 61.8): Indicates the market is choppy and trading sideways.
  • RSI Levels:
    • High (Above 61.8): Suggests positive momentum.
    • Mid (38.2 - 61.8): Indicates neutral momentum.
    • Low (Below 38.2): Suggests negative momentum.

Details

This script is built on the inverse relationship between the Choppiness Index (CHOP) and the Relative Strength Index (RSI).

  • Choppiness Index: Unlike directional indicators, CHOP only measures the "trendiness" of a market. It uses a fractal dimension calculation to determine if price action is staying within a range or expanding into a trend.
  • Relative Strength Index: A standard momentum oscillator that measures the speed and change of price movements. By overlaying it with CHOP, the indicator provides a more comprehensive view of whether a trend has the necessary momentum to sustain itself.

Settings

  • Chop Length: The lookback period used for the Choppiness Index calculation.
  • Offset: Shifts the CHOP plot forward or backward on the x-axis.
  • RSI Length: The lookback period used for the Relative Strength Index calculation.
  • Source: The price input used for the RSI calculation (default is Close).
  • Barcolor: Toggles the candle coloring based on the RSI and CHOP relationship.

FAQ

How do I use the Choppiness Index and RSI for signals?

The indicator is best used to confirm trends; a breakout accompanied by a falling CHOP and rising RSI often indicates a healthy trend.

What do the dashed lines represent?

The dashed lines are set at 38.2 and 61.8, which act as the primary thresholds for both indicators to determine "trending" vs "choppy" zones.
