The MACD Area indicator calculates and displays the cumulative area for each region above and below the zero line in the MACD histogram, providing a unique momentum metric to identify trend strength and potential reversals.

Usage

The MACD Area tool can be used to gauge the total "mass" of a momentum move. Unlike a standard histogram which only shows the current momentum value, the area calculation sums the values of the histogram for the duration of its stay above or below the zero line.

  • Momentum Strength: Larger cumulative areas indicate stronger, more sustained momentum. If the area continues to grow, it suggests the current trend has significant backing.
  • Divergence Analysis: Users can look for divergences between price and the MACD Area. For instance, if price achieves a higher high but the MACD Area forms a lower high compared to the previous bullish cycle, it may indicate that the momentum is exhausting and a reversal is imminent.
  • Trend Transitions: The area resets when the histogram crosses the zero line, marking the beginning of a new momentum cycle.

Details

The script calculates the standard MACD line, signal line, and histogram using user-defined exponential moving averages. The "Area" component is derived by tracking the sign of the histogram; as long as the histogram remains on one side of the zero line, the script adds the current histogram value to a running total. This cumulative sum is then plotted as a secondary, broader histogram with optional labels to show the specific numerical value of the current area.

FAQ

How do I use the MACD Area to find reversals?

Look for instances where price makes a new extreme but the MACD Area fails to do so. A lower high in the Area while price makes a higher high suggests weakening buying pressure.

What is the difference between the Histogram and the Area?

The histogram shows the instantaneous difference between the MACD and Signal lines, while the Area shows the total accumulated value of those differences since the last zero-line cross.
