The Anchored Momentum indicator provides a refined approach to measuring market velocity by anchoring momentum calculations to a Simple Moving Average (SMA) rather than a fixed historical price point.

Usage

The Anchored Momentum (AMOM) tool is used primarily as an oscillator to identify trend changes and momentum shifts. Traders can interpret the script through several methods:

  • Zero Line Crosses: Moving above zero suggests bullish momentum, while moving below zero suggests bearish momentum.
  • Signal Line Crossovers: Crossovers between the Momentum line and the Signal line can indicate potential entry or exit points.
  • Divergences: Discrepancies between price action and the oscillator movement may signal potential reversals.
  • Histogram: When enabled, the histogram highlights the relationship between the momentum and signal lines, providing visual clarity on trend strength.

Details

Developed by Rudy Stefenel, the Anchored Momentum differs from standard momentum indicators which typically compare the current price to the price $n$ bars ago. Instead, AMOM calculates the percentage difference between the current price (or a smoothed version of it) and an SMA of the price. This "anchoring" effect helps reduce the noise associated with arbitrary historical price comparisons and provides a more stable reference point for assessing relative momentum.

Settings

  • Momentum Period: Sets the lookback period for the internal calculations (default is 10).
  • Signal Period: The SMA period applied to the momentum line to create the signal line (default is 8).
  • Smooth Momentum: A toggle to use an EMA of the price instead of the raw close price for the calculation.
  • Smoothing Period: The period used for price smoothing if the "Smooth Momentum" option is enabled.
  • Show Histogram: Enables a visual histogram that highlights crossovers and momentum direction.
  • Enable Barcolors: When active, colors the chart bars based on the momentum state to align price action with the indicator output.

FAQ

How do I use the signal line in Anchored Momentum?

The signal line is a smoothed version of the momentum line. A bullish signal occurs when the momentum line crosses above the signal line, while a bearish signal occurs when it crosses below.

What is the advantage of anchoring momentum to an SMA?

Anchoring momentum to an SMA provides a dynamic baseline that adapts to price trends, potentially offering a more consistent representation of momentum compared to traditional fixed-distance momentum oscillators.
