L1 Another Improved MACD Indicator
Oct 5, 2020

The L1 Another Improved MACD Indicator provides a refined perspective on the classic Moving Average Convergence Divergence by utilizing a customized histogram algorithm and smoothing techniques to identify sub-level trend changes.
Usage
The L1 Another Improved MACD Indicator is used to identify trend momentum and potential reversal points. Users can interpret the indicator through the following components:
- MACD & Signal Lines: The relationship between the white (Fast) and yellow (Slow) lines indicates the primary trend. Crossovers are marked with "B" (Buy) or "S" (Sell) labels on the oscillator pane to highlight potential entry or exit points.
- Improved Histogram: Unlike the standard MACD histogram, this version applies a 3-period EMA to the raw difference. The color-coding helps identify momentum shifts:
- Green: Indicates bullish momentum where the histogram is above its EMA and above zero.
- Red: Indicates bearish momentum where the histogram is above its EMA but below zero (potential recovery/slowing bearishness).
- Blue: Indicates weakening momentum where the histogram is below its EMA.
- Background Fills: The space between the MACD and Signal lines is filled to provide a clear visual representation of the current trend direction and strength.
Details
The script is based on the original work of Gerald Appel (1979) but introduces a proprietary modification to the histogram calculation. While the standard MACD calculates the difference between the MACD line and the Signal line, this tool introduces a "MACD Signal EMA" (a 3-period EMA of the histogram) to create a more responsive secondary signal. This allows for the detection of subtle momentum changes that might be missed by standard lagging indicators.
Settings
Inputs
- Fast EMA Period: Sets the timeframe for the shorter exponential moving average (Default: 12).
- Slow EMA Period: Sets the timeframe for the longer exponential moving average (Default: 26).
- Signal Line Period: Determines the smoothing period for the MACD Signal line (Default: 9).
FAQ
How do I use the "B" and "S" labels?
The "B" and "S" labels appear when the MACD line crosses over or under the signal line, respectively, indicating a potential shift in trend direction.
What makes this different from the standard MACD?
This version improves the histogram by applying an additional moving average to it, allowing for color-coded momentum states that provide more detail than simple positive/negative values.
