The Session Open Range, Breakout & Trap Framework - TrendPredator OB indicator provides a comprehensive structural analysis tool for identifying intraday session dynamics, liquidity traps, and breakout opportunities across major equity sessions. It automates the mapping of key reference points like the initial opening range, anchored VWAPs, and session-specific expansion levels to help traders interpret price behavior relative to established session value.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on how the indicator interprets early session activity to define directional bias. Traders can use the "Open Box" as a foundational reference: price holding above the box indicates bullish conviction, while a break and immediate reversal back into the box may signal a trap or fakeout.

  • Session Transition: Use the automated Tokyo, London, and New York boxes to see how liquidity shifts from one session to the next.
  • Expansion Targets: When a breakout occurs, the automated range expansions (1x, 2x, 3x) act as objective take-profit zones or areas where the trend might exhaust.
  • VWAP Alignment: Compare price relative to the anchored session VWAP to determine if the market is in a state of balance or imbalance.
  • Equity Open (EQO) Levels: Monitor the session open price as a "magnet" level. If price departs and returns to this level after the opening range is set, it often provides a secondary entry or exit point.

Details

The script is built on classical Open Range Breakout (ORB) principles, specifically incorporating concepts used by Stacey Burke and Tony Crabel. It formalizes discretionary techniques into mechanical rules by calculating specific time windows (e.g., the first 30 or 60 minutes) to set the high and low boundaries for the trading day.

A unique feature is the "12-Candle Window," which highlights the peak volatility period where institutional moves typically manifest. The indicator also manages chart real estate by "cutting" levels once they have been revisited, ensuring that only active, untested liquidity levels remain visible.

Settings

Session Box Settings

  • Tokyo/London/NY OB: Toggles the visibility and time parameters for the opening range boxes.
  • 15M OB: Enables a secondary, narrower range to capture very early volatility.
  • Extend OB's H/L: Determines how many hours the opening range boundaries should be projected forward.

Extensions & VWAP

  • Range Extensions: Sets the number of multiples (e.g., 1x, 2x) projected from the height of the Open Box.
  • First Hour Extensions: Toggles the high/low levels established during the first full hour of trading.
  • Session VWAPs: Configures anchored VWAPs for each session to track intraday value development.

Equity Open Levels

  • Open Levels: Toggles the horizontal line representing the exact opening price of the session.
  • Cut If Touched: Automatically stops drawing the open level line once price intersects it after the opening range period.

FAQ

How do I interpret the Open Box? The Open Box represents the initial balance of the session. A breakout that stays outside the box suggests a trending session, while a breakout that fails suggests a range-bound or reversal session.

What are the expansion levels used for? Expansion levels are mathematical projections of the initial range. They serve as objective targets for breakouts and help identify where a move might be overextended.
