The Bitcoin Momentum Strategy indicator is a long-only trend-following tool designed to capture upside volatility in Bitcoin while protecting capital during bearish shifts using a dynamic trailing stop mechanism.

Usage

The Bitcoin Momentum Strategy is used to identify optimal entry points during bullish trends and manage exits through a "ratcheting" trailing stop. The strategy remains in a cash position when Bitcoin trades below its higher-timeframe moving average to avoid significant drawdowns common in bear markets.

  • Entry Signal: Occurs when price is above the Higher Timeframe (HTF) EMA and no "Caution" condition is present.
  • Caution Condition: Triggered when recent volatility exceeds a specific threshold (1.5x ATR from recent highs) or when the price closes below the Daily EMA.
  • Exit Signal: Triggered when the price closes below the dynamic trailing stop or falls below the HTF EMA.

Details

The core concept behind this strategy is the adaptive trailing stop. During sustained bullish momentum, the stop-loss is "loosened" (set at 1.0x ATR) to allow the position room to breathe. However, if the "Caution" condition is met—indicating high bearish volatility—the stop-loss automatically tightens to a "ratchet" multiplier (default 0.2x ATR). This protects open profits from rapid downside moves. The inclusion of a Weekly EMA filter ensures the strategy only participates when the long-term trend is technically healthy.

Settings

Strategy Entry Settings

  • Higher Timeframe: The timeframe used for the primary trend filter (default is Weekly).
  • EMA Length: The lookback period for the exponential moving averages.
  • ATR Length: The lookback period for calculating the Average True Range used in volatility filters and stops.

Strategy Exit Settings

  • Trail Stop Source: The price source (e.g., Low) used to calculate the trailing stop level.
  • Trail Stop Lookback: The number of bars used to find the recent high/low for trailing stop anchoring.
  • Trailing Stop Ratchet Multiplier: The multiplier applied to the ATR when the "Caution" state is active to tighten the exit.
  • Exit On Last Historical Bar: A toggle for backtesting to force-close open positions at the end of the historical data.

Strategy Filters

  • Start Filter: The date and time to begin backtesting or searching for setups.
  • End Filter: The date and time to stop the strategy execution.

FAQ

How do I use this strategy on different assets? While optimized for Bitcoin, you can adjust the "Trailing Stop Ratchet Multiplier" and "ATR Length" to accommodate the higher or lower volatility of altcoins or other asset classes.

What does the "Momentum Strength" square at the bottom represent? Green indicates a healthy bullish trend, yellow indicates a "Caution" state (high volatility or price below short-term EMA), and red indicates the price is below the HTF EMA.
