The RSI Momentum Bands indicator projects Relative Strength Index momentum directly onto the price chart through dynamic bands, helping traders visualize trend strength and potential exhaustion. By weighting price changes with RSI values, it creates a cloud that acts as a fluid support and resistance zone based on momentum velocity.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on interpreting the relationship between the price and the colored bands:

  • Trend Identification: When the Buy Line is above the Sell Line, a bullish trend is indicated. Conversely, when the Sell Line is above the Buy Line, the trend is considered bearish.
  • Momentum Strength: The distance between the lines represents the intensity of the current momentum. A widening cloud suggests increasing momentum, while a narrowing cloud (squeeze) suggests potential consolidation or an upcoming reversal.
  • Bar Coloring: If enabled, the indicator colors the price bars based on trend direction and momentum intensity. Solid green or red bars indicate strong momentum, while lighter shades suggest a potential loss of strength or a "squeeze" state.
  • Crossovers: Traders can look for crossovers between the Buy and Sell lines as signals for potential trend shifts.

Details

The RSI Momentum Bands tool calculates momentum by taking the smoothed change in price over a specified length. This delta is then weighted by the RSI value (0-100 scale) to create displacement from a baseline. The baseline is derived from an Exponential Moving Average (EMA) of historical price data, adjusted by the calculated momentum differential. This unique approach bridges the gap between a traditional oscillator (RSI) and trend-following overlays.

Settings

  • Source: The price data used for all calculations (typically the Close price).
  • RSI Length: The lookback period used for the Relative Strength Index calculation.
  • Smoothing Length: The period used for smoothing the price change and the final band lines via EMA/SMA.
  • Show Bar Color?: Toggles the momentum-based bar coloring on the chart.

FAQ

How do I interpret the cloud color?

The area between the lines serves as a volatility/momentum zone. While the fill color remains consistent, the relative position of the Buy and Sell lines determines the trend bias.

What does it mean when the bands get very thin?

Thin bands indicate a "Squeeze" state where the momentum is slowing down. This often precedes a breakout or a trend reversal.
