The Smarter MACD Band indicator transforms the classic MACD oscillator into an overlay band to help traders visualize trend momentum and average volatility directly on the price chart. By projecting MACD values relative to a smoothed baseline, it identifies potential trade setups based on historical peak and dip averages.

Usage

The indicator can be used to identify trend exhaustion and potential reversals. When the MACD signal lines move outside the shaded average bands, it suggests the price is reaching historical extremes relative to the recent trend.

  • Trend Identification: The color-coded MACD signal line indicates momentum direction, with darker colors representing strong trends and faded colors representing weakening momentum.
  • Averages: The horizontal shaded region represents the average range between MACD peaks and dips. Prices interacting with the outer edges of these bands often signal overbought or oversold conditions.
  • Divergence: The tool includes built-in divergence detection, marked by triangles when the MACD signal peaks or dips show relative strength or weakness compared to previous cycles.

Details

The script functions by calculating a standard MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) and applying it to a price-based baseline (EMA).

Unlike a standard sub-pane oscillator, this version calculates the running average of peaks and dips across the entire chart span. It then calculates a secondary "bold" average which focuses on values that exceed the overall average, providing a more robust measure of significant price expansions. The MACD Channel Multiplier allows users to scale these values to better fit the volatility of different assets.

Visibility Settings

  • Show MACD?: Toggles the visibility of the MACD bands and signal lines on the chart.
  • Show right-side monitor?: Toggles the informational table on the top-right of the chart.

EMA Settings

  • Fast EMA Length: Determines the period for the faster baseline EMA calculation.
  • Slow EMA Length: Determines the period for the slower baseline EMA calculation.

MACD Settings

  • MACD Fast MA Length: The short-period moving average for the MACD calculation.
  • MACD Slow MA Length: The long-period moving average for the MACD calculation.
  • MACD Signal Length: The smoothing period applied to the MACD line to create the signal line.
  • MACD Channel Smoothing: Adjusts the period of the EMA used as the baseline for the overlay.
  • MACD Channel Multiplier: A scaling factor used to expand or contract the vertical width of the MACD bands.

FAQ

How do I interpret the colored triangles? The triangles indicate bullish (green) or bearish (red) divergences, suggesting that momentum is shifting even if price action has not yet fully reversed.

What does the shaded area represent? The shaded area represents the "normal" range of the MACD based on its historical average peaks and dips, helping you see when the current move is statistically significant.
