ForecastingDashboardMoving Averages

The CT Moving Average Crossover Indicator tool calculates and displays the specific price levels required for various moving average pairs to cross on the current bar. It provides traders with forward-looking data to anticipate trend shifts, support, and resistance levels based on customizable technical parameters.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to monitor potential trend changes before they occur. Users can select up to nine individual moving averages and define up to five specific pairs to track for potential crossovers.

  • Anticipating Crossovers: By plotting "Cross Price" levels, the script shows exactly where the current price needs to close for a bullish or bearish crossover to trigger. This helps traders set realistic entry or exit targets based on momentum.
  • Trend Identification: The tool allows for the simultaneous display of multiple moving averages (SMA, EMA, RMA, WMA, HMA, LSMA). A rising moving average typically signals an uptrend, while a falling one signals a downtrend.
  • Visual Analysis: Users can enable background fills between specific MA pairs to visualize the "gap" or "spread" between different timeframes, which often indicates the strength of a trend.
  • Information Panel: The optional "Crossover Level" info box summarizes the required prices and current conditions for all selected pairs in a single, clear dashboard on the chart.

Details

The script is designed to eliminate the lag traditionally associated with moving average crossovers by solving the mathematical formula for the "next" price point.

  • Supported Types: It includes Simple (SMA), Exponential (EMA), Relative (RMA), Weighted (WMA), Hull (HMA), and Least Squares (LSMA) moving averages.
  • Crossover Calculation: The script calculates the required closing price of the current bar that would result in the two selected moving averages having an equal value. If a crossover is mathematically impossible (e.g., resulting in a price of zero or less), the panel will display "Impossible" to prevent chart scaling issues.
  • Sensitivity: Shorter-length averages (e.g., 5, 10, 20) are more sensitive to recent price action, while longer-term averages (e.g., 50, 200) identify broader market cycles.

Settings

  • Price Source: Defines the data point used for calculations (default is Close).
  • Moving Average Lines: A toggle to show or hide the actual moving average plots on the chart.
  • MA Selection (1-9): Allows users to define the length, type (SMA, EMA, etc.), and color for nine independent moving averages.
  • Crossover Pairs (1-5): Users can select which two MAs form a pair to monitor for a crossover.
  • Cross Price Lines: Toggles the plotting of horizontal lines representing the price level needed for a crossover.
  • Fills: Enables color fills between designated moving average pairs to highlight trend expansion or contraction.
  • Info Panel Settings: Options to customize the visibility, position, decimal precision, and color scheme of the on-chart data table.

FAQ

How do I interpret an "Impossible" reading in the info box? This occurs when the mathematical requirements for a crossover cannot be met by any positive price value on the current bar, often due to the extreme distance or slope difference between the two selected averages.

Can I use different types of moving averages for a single crossover pair? Yes, you can pair any of the nine defined MAs regardless of their type; for example, you can track the crossover between a 10-period SMA and a 20-period EMA.
