Dynamic Volume Profile Oscillator | AlphaAlgos
Mar 22, 2025

The Dynamic Volume Profile Oscillator indicator provides a responsive momentum oscillator that transforms traditional volume profile analysis into a normalized signal for identifying market reversals and trend strength.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to interpret market conditions through volume-weighted price action. Traders can utilize this tool for trend following and mean reversion strategies.
Trend Following
To identify trend direction, observe the oscillator's position relative to the adaptive midline. When the oscillator is above the midline and the fast signal line (5-period EMA) crosses above the slow signal line (15-period EMA), it indicates bullish momentum. Conversely, readings below the midline with a bearish signal crossover suggest downward trend strength.
Mean Reversion
The tool features 10-level intensity gradient zones that expand and contract based on volatility. When the oscillator reaches the outer edges of these zones (indicated by intense color saturation), price is considered overextended relative to its volume-weighted equilibrium. Traders look for the oscillator to exit these extreme zones as a signal for potential reversals.
Volume Analysis Modes
The indicator offers two distinct methodologies:
- Mean Reversion Mode: Measures the price deviation from the volume-weighted mean price (VWAP), normalized to highlight overbought and oversold conditions.
- Standard Mode: Normalizes volume activity relative to a historical lookback to identify unusual volume spikes and patterns.
Details
The script constructs a dynamic volume profile by aggregating price and volume data over a user-defined lookback period. It calculates a volume-weighted mean price and measures the current price's deviation from this level. To ensure the oscillator remains relevant across different market regimes, it employs an adaptive midline based on a simple moving average of historical oscillator values. The zones are calculated using the standard deviation of the oscillator, allowing the intensity levels to adjust dynamically to current market volatility.
Settings
Volume Analysis
- Price Source: Determines the price data (close, hlc3, etc.) used for profile calculations.
- Volume Source: Defines the volume data input.
- Lookback Period: The number of bars used to calculate the volume profile and deviation.
- Profile Calculation Periods: Frequency at which the internal volume profile is recalculated.
Oscillator Settings
- Smoothing Length: Controls the EMA smoothing applied to the raw oscillator value.
- Sensitivity: Adjusts how responsively the oscillator reacts to price and volume changes.
- Mean Reversion Mode: Toggles between volume-weighted price deviation and standard volume normalization.
Threshold Settings
- Use Adaptive Midline: Toggles between a dynamic midline and a fixed value of 50.
- Adaptive Midline Period: The lookback used to calculate the dynamic center of the oscillator.
- Zone Width Multiplier: Adjusts the width and sensitivity of the bullish and bearish gradient zones.
Display Settings
- Color Bars: Enables or disables chart bar coloring based on the oscillator's trend state.
FAQ
How do I interpret the gradient colors? The gradient zones represent the distance from the volume-weighted mean. Darker or more intense colors indicate that the price is at a historical extreme relative to volume, while lighter colors near the midline suggest equilibrium.
What is the difference between the fast and slow signal lines? The fast signal is a 5-period EMA and the slow signal is a 15-period EMA. Crossovers between these lines help confirm short-term momentum shifts within the larger trend defined by the midline.
How do I get access to the Dynamic Volume Profile Oscillator? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
