The Follow Line indicator provides a trend-following mechanism based on volatility and Bollinger Band thresholds to identify market direction and potential entry points.

Usage

The Follow Line tool is primarily used to identify trend shifts and provide support/resistance levels during trending markets. Traders can interpret the script as follows:

  • Bullish Trend: When the price closes above the Upper Bollinger Band, the line turns blue (or green) and moves upward, following the price at a distance. This indicates a potential BUY signal.
  • Bearish Trend: When the price closes below the Lower Bollinger Band, the line turns red and moves downward. This indicates a potential SELL signal.
  • Neutral/Flat Periods: If the price remains within the Bollinger Band boundaries, the line remains flat, helping traders avoid false signals in sideways markets.

Details

The indicator's calculation is rooted in volatility-adjusted price action. It utilizes Bollinger Bands to define the breakout zones. When the price exceeds the specified standard deviation of the Bollinger Bands, the script initiates a trend phase.

The "Follow Line" itself is constructed by trailing the price at a distance defined by either the High/Low prices or an ATR (Average True Range) buffer. This implementation ensures that the values align with the original versions found on MT4 and Metastock, providing consistent cross-platform analysis.

Settings

  • ATR Period: Defines the lookback period used to calculate the Average True Range for the trend filter.
  • Bollinger Bands Period: Sets the lookback period for the SMA and Standard Deviation used in the Bollinger Band calculation.
  • Bollinger Bands Deviation: Adjusts the width of the bands. Lower values provide earlier signals but increase the risk of "whipsaws," while higher values (e.g., 1.5–2.0) offer more stable signals in volatile conditions.
  • ATR Filter On/Off: When enabled, the indicator uses ATR to distance the line from price action. When disabled, the line follows raw High/Low values, making it more sensitive.
  • Show Signals: Toggles the visibility of the "BUY" and "SELL" labels on the chart.

FAQ

How do I interpret the flat sections of the Follow Line? Flat sections occur when the price has not yet broken the opposite Bollinger Band boundary, indicating a continuation of the previous trend or a lack of sufficient momentum to reverse.

Should I change the Bollinger Band Deviation for different timeframes? Yes, lower timeframes often require a higher deviation (like 1.5) to filter out market noise, whereas higher timeframes may work effectively with the default value of 1.0.
