Breakout Scalper (Session)
Aug 14, 2018

The Breakout Scalper (Session) indicator aims to capture momentum breakouts at the daily high or low within a user-defined trading window to avoid intraday oscillations.
Usage
The tool identifies potential breakout opportunities by comparing a fast median price against a slow daily median. Trades are only initiated when the current "Instant Price" (an EMA of the close) breaks above or below the fast median and the "Trend Cloud" confirms sufficient volatility and direction.
Key usage points include:
- Trend Cloud Confirmation: The area between the fast and slow medians changes color. Green indicates a bullish breakout environment, Red indicates a bearish environment, and Blue/Gray indicates insufficient momentum or range.
- Daily Range Focus: Unlike standard Donchian strategies, the "Slow" window in this version is anchored to the actual high and low of the current day. This ensures entries only occur when the price is making new daily highs or lows.
- Session Filtering: The script only permits new entries during the configured trading session. All open positions are automatically closed when the session ends.
Details
The script utilizes two distinct Donchian-based calculations. The "Slow" calculation tracks the absolute high and low of the current daily period. The "Fast" calculation is a more reactive window constrained within the daily range.
A "Cloud Width" is calculated as the difference between the fast and slow medians. This width is compared against the Average True Range (ATR) to ensure that the breakout has enough relative strength (Cloud ATR Multiplier) before a signal is generated. This helps filter out "choppy" price action where the medians are too close together.
Settings
- Fast Window: The lookback period used for the fast Donchian channel mid-range.
- Slow Window: The lookback period used for calculating the ATR (volatility) filter.
- Instant Period: The period for the EMA that represents the current smoothed price.
- Minimum Cloud ATR Multiplier: The minimum ratio of the cloud width to the ATR required to activate a trade signal.
- Trading Session: The specific time window (e.g., '1000-1500') where trade entries are permitted.
