Elliot Wave Oscillator
Nov 26, 2016

The Elliot Wave Oscillator indicator provides a visual representation of price momentum to help traders identify Elliott Wave cycles and potential trend reversals. By calculating the difference between a fast and slow Simple Moving Average (SMA), it highlights shifts in market strength through a color-coded histogram.
Usage
The Usage section focuses on interpreting momentum and identifying specific Elliott Waves within a price trend. Traders typically use the oscillator to pinpoint the strongest part of a move, often associated with "Wave 3" in Elliott Wave Theory, which usually coincides with the highest or lowest peaks on the histogram.
- Zero Line Crossovers: When the histogram crosses above zero, it indicates a shift toward bullish momentum. Conversely, a cross below zero suggests bearish momentum is taking control.
- Trend Strength: Expanding histogram bars suggest accelerating momentum, while receding bars indicate a potential slowdown or the beginning of a corrective wave.
- Normalization: By enabling the percentage-based calculation, users can compare momentum across different price levels or historical periods more effectively, as the values are relative to the current price rather than absolute points.
Details
The Elliot Wave Oscillator is constructed using two Simple Moving Averages. Unlike some variations that use Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs), this version strictly utilizes SMAs to stay true to traditional EWO calculations.
The primary formula is:
- SMA 1 (Fast): Defaulting to 5 periods.
- SMA 2 (Slow): Defaulting to 35 periods.
- Difference: Fast SMA - Slow SMA.
If the "Show Dif as percent of current Candle" option is enabled, the difference is divided by the current price source and multiplied by 100. This implementation ensures that the oscillator remains scalable on historical charts where price levels may differ significantly from current values.
Settings
- Source: Determines the price data used for the SMA calculations (e.g., Close, HL2, OHLC4).
- SMA 1 Length: Sets the period for the fast Simple Moving Average (default is 5).
- SMA 2 Length: Sets the period for the slow Simple Moving Average (default is 35).
- Show Dif as percent of current Candle: When enabled, converts the oscillator value into a percentage of the current price for better historical comparison.
FAQ
How do I identify a trend change using the EWO? A trend change is often signaled when the histogram crosses the zero line. A move from negative to positive indicates a bullish shift, while a move from positive to negative indicates a bearish shift.
Why are the default lengths set to 5 and 35? The 5 and 35-period settings are the standard parameters used in Elliott Wave Theory to best distinguish between the different phases of impulse and corrective waves.
