VWAP Spider
Mar 23, 2024

The VWAP Spider indicator provides an expanded Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) analysis tool featuring an extensive series of standard deviation (SD) bands reaching up to +10 SD. By anchoring the calculation to the historical data start and including half-step increments, this tool offers a comprehensive framework for identifying dynamic support and resistance levels across various market conditions.
Usage
The VWAP Spider is primarily used to identify institutional value areas and extreme price deviations.
- Support and Resistance: The standard deviation lines serve as dynamic levels. Traders can observe price interactions at these bands; a bounce may indicate a strong entry point, while a sustained break might signal a trend shift.
- Extreme Deviations: Because this tool includes higher SD levels (up to +10), it is particularly useful for identifying "blow-off" tops or extreme oversold conditions that standard VWAP tools might miss.
- Trend Analysis: The color-coded fills and gradient system allow users to visualize the strength of a trend. Steeper slopes in the bands often coincide with strong directional momentum.
- Timeframe Selection: For the most accurate cumulative volume-weighted data, it is recommended to use this indicator on weekly or monthly resolutions.
Details
The script calculates the Volume Weighted Average Price by accumulating volume-weighted price values and price squared values from the beginning of the available price history. This cumulative approach ensures that the VWAP and its corresponding standard deviations reflect the total volume-weighted consensus of value since the asset's inception on the chart.
The standard deviation bands are calculated using volume-weighted variance, providing a more statistically significant measure of volatility than standard price-only deviation. The visual output includes a gradient fill system to distinguish between different SD zones and labels for clear identification of specific levels.
Settings
- Positive Fill Color: Sets the color for the background fills between the VWAP and positive SD levels.
- Negative Fill Color: Sets the color for the background fills between the VWAP and negative SD levels.
- VWAP Line Color: Adjusts the color of the central VWAP baseline.
FAQ
How do I use the VWAP Spider for entries?
Traders often look for price reactions at specific SD levels, such as the +1 or -1 SD bands, to identify potential mean reversion or trend continuation opportunities.
Why are there so many lines?
The "Spider" design provides a higher resolution of volatility. This allows traders to see exactly where price is exhausting itself in highly volatile environments where standard 2 or 3 SD bands are frequently exceeded.
