The RSI of Zero Lag MA (ValueRay) indicator provides a smoothed momentum oscillator designed to identify reliable exit signals and market reversals with minimal delay. By applying the Relative Strength Index (RSI) to a Zero Lag Moving Average rather than raw price, it filters out noise while maintaining high responsiveness to price action changes.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on identifying overbought and oversold conditions through the filtered lens of the Zero Lag MA.

  • Exit Signals: Traders can use the indicator to pinpoint exits when the oscillator reaches extreme levels. For example, crossing back below the upper threshold (default 88) can signal a potential exit for long positions.
  • Reversal Identification: When the line crosses above the lower threshold (default 12), it suggests a potential upward reversal from oversold conditions.
  • Visual Aids: The script includes background highlights for different states. A faint background color appears when the RSI is in extreme zones, while a more intense highlight triggers when the value crosses back into the neutral range, signifying a potential change in momentum.

Details

This tool calculates a Zero Lag Moving Average (ZLMA) using the difference between two Linear Regression curves to offset lag. Specifically, it calculates a primary LSMA and a second LSMA of that result; the difference is then added back to the first to create a zero-lag effect. The final output is derived by applying the standard RSI formula to this ZLMA value. This process creates an oscillator that is significantly smoother than a price-based RSI but reacts faster than an RSI based on a traditional EMA or SMA.

Settings

  • MA Length: Determines the period for the underlying Zero Lag Moving Average (2 to 252).
  • MA Source: The price source used for the calculation (default is HLC3).
  • RSI of MA Period: The lookback period for the RSI calculation (2 to 100).
  • Upper Line RSI: The threshold for overbought conditions (default 88).
  • Lower Line RSI: The threshold for oversold conditions (default 12).
  • Background when Above/Below High/Low Lines?: Enables background coloring while the RSI remains in extreme zones.
  • Highlight when crossing back to normal range?: Enables distinct background highlights when the RSI crosses back into the 12-88 range.

FAQ

How do I use the RSI of Zero Lag MA (ValueRay) for trade exits?

You can look for the RSI line to cross back into the central range from the overbought or oversold zones, which indicates that the immediate momentum is exhausting.

What makes this different from a standard RSI?

Unlike a standard RSI which uses raw price data, this version uses a Zero Lag Moving Average as its source. This reduces "jitter" and noise while maintaining responsiveness to trend changes.
