MACD Higher TimeFrame
Oct 22, 2019

The MACD Higher TimeFrame indicator provides a Moving Average Convergence Divergence oscillator calculated based on a user-defined higher interval, allowing traders to view macro momentum trends directly on lower timeframe charts.
Usage
The Usage of this indicator focuses on identifying trend direction and momentum shifts from a higher timeframe perspective. Traders can use it to ensure they are trading in alignment with the broader market trend. For example, if the current chart is set to 15 minutes, the indicator can be set to "Daily" to show whether the daily momentum is bullish or bearish.
Typical interpretations include:
- Zero Line Crosses: When the histogram crosses above zero, it indicates bullish momentum on the higher timeframe.
- Signal Line Crosses: When the MACD line crosses above the signal line, it suggests a potential upward reversal or acceleration in trend.
- Color Transitions: Bright colors indicate strengthening momentum (rising histogram), while faded colors indicate weakening momentum (falling histogram).
Details
This tool utilizes the request.security() function to fetch data from a specified higher timeframe. It calculates the standard MACD components—the MACD line (difference between two Simple Moving Averages), the Signal line (SMA of the MACD line), and the Histogram (difference between MACD and Signal). By calculating these values on a higher timeframe and projecting them onto the current chart, the tool helps filter out local price noise and focuses on significant structural shifts.
Settings
- MACD Fast Length: The period for the shorter Simple Moving Average used in the MACD calculation.
- MACD Slow Length: The period for the longer Simple Moving Average used in the MACD calculation.
- MACD Smoothing: The period for the signal line (SMA of the MACD line).
- MACD TimeFrame: The specific higher timeframe (e.g., 1H, 4H, D, W) from which the MACD data is requested.
FAQ
How do I interpret the histogram colors?
Bright green indicates the histogram is positive and rising; dark green indicates it is positive but falling. Bright red indicates the histogram is negative and falling; dark red indicates it is negative but rising.
Why do the lines look "steppy" on my chart?
Because the indicator is pulling data from a higher timeframe, the values only update once per candle of that higher timeframe. This creates a stepped appearance when viewed on a lower timeframe.
