Open Range Breakout V3
Apr 8, 2016

The Open Range Breakout V3 indicator tracks price action during the initial trading period of a session or timeframe to establish key support and resistance levels. By defining these boundaries early, it helps traders identify potential breakout opportunities and volatility expansions throughout the trading day.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend direction and potential entry points. The indicator plots a central range (Top Range and Bottom Range) along with "Stretch" levels (Top Stretch and Bottom Stretch) that represent volatility-adjusted extensions.
- Breakout Identification: Traders can monitor price action relative to the Top and Bottom Range lines. A candle closing above the Top Range may indicate bullish momentum, while a close below the Bottom Range suggests bearish sentiment.
- Stretch Targets: The High and Low Stretch levels act as dynamic volatility targets. Crossing these levels often signifies a strong directional move.
- Range Midpoint: When enabled, the Mid line (M) provides a neutral pivot point within the opening range to help gauge short-term bias.
Details
The script operates using two distinct modes: Timeframe and Session. In Timeframe mode, the opening range is derived from a specific user-defined timeframe (e.g., the first 60 minutes of the daily session). In Session mode, the user can input specific hours to define the range capture.
A unique feature of this tool is the "Stretch" calculation. It uses a moving average of the range (the maximum of high minus open or open minus low) to project volatility levels above and below the initial range. This provides a statistical context to the breakout, helping to filter out minor fluctuations from significant market shifts.
Settings

- Timeframe for range capture: The higher timeframe anchor (typically 'D' for Daily) used to reset the range.
- Session for mode 2: Defines the specific hours for the range calculation when using Session mode.
- Repaint?: Toggles the use of the
lookaheadfeature in security calls. - Show Mid line?: Enables or disables the display of the range's midpoint.
FAQ
How do I use the Session mode correctly?
When using Session mode, ensure the session input matches the desired window. Note that if you are defining a range that crosses midnight or specific exchange offsets, the format should reflect the start and end times accurately.
What do the shaded areas represent?
The shaded areas represent the "Stretch" zones. The green zone at the top is the area between the High Range and the High Stretch level, while the red zone at the bottom is the area between the Low Range and the Low Stretch level.
