The Smart Breakout Targets indicator is a comprehensive volatility tracking tool that identifies market consolidation zones and provides automated entry, stop-loss, and take-profit targets upon a confirmed price breakout. It utilizes a dual-engine compression system to filter out false signals and provides a structural framework for trade management.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to navigate breakout environments:

  • Identifying Consolidations: The script identifies tight ranges (gray boxes) where Bollinger Band Width and ATR contraction coincide. Users should look for these zones as precursors to significant moves.
  • Confirming Breakouts: Signals are generated when price closes outside the detected range with an impulse candle (large body relative to ATR). Bullish breakouts appear as "Long" labels below the bar, while bearish breakouts appear as "Short" labels.
  • Trade Management: Once a breakout is confirmed, the tool draws structural targets. The stop-loss is placed at the opposite side of the range with an ATR buffer, and three take-profit levels are calculated based on risk-to-reward multiples (1:1, 1:2, 1:3).
  • Monitoring Outcomes: The script tracks the trade's progress. A checkmark (✔) appears if TP3 is reached, while an "X" (✘) indicates the stop-loss was hit.

Details

The indicator is built on the principle that volatility compression precedes expansion. To ensure signal quality, it incorporates several unique mechanics:

  • Dual-Engine Squeeze: Unlike standard squeeze indicators, this tool requires both Bollinger Band Width and absolute ATR contraction to be below their respective moving averages. This prevents "drifting" price action from being flagged as a consolidation.
  • Adaptive Donchian Range: The range boundaries are not fixed lookbacks; they expand dynamically during a squeeze to capture every local high and low, ensuring the resulting support and resistance zones are structurally accurate.
  • Impulse Filtering: A breakout is only valid if the candle body size exceeds a user-defined ATR threshold. This ensures the move has genuine momentum rather than just a thin wick clipping the boundary.
  • Signal Strength Scoring: Each signal is graded from 0–4 based on factors like volume surge, higher-timeframe alignment, and squeeze duration, allowing traders to prioritize high-conviction setups.

Settings

Main Settings

  • Squeeze Detection Length: The lookback period for calculating volatility baselines.
  • BB Multiplier: The standard deviation setting for Bollinger Bands.
  • Squeeze Threshold: The sensitivity for Bollinger Band Width contraction.
  • ATR Compression Ratio: The required ratio of ATR contraction for squeeze confirmation.
  • Min Squeeze Bars: The minimum duration required for a consolidation to be valid.
  • Impulse Body Threshold: The minimum candle body size relative to ATR required for a breakout signal.
  • Prevent Overlap: When enabled, prevents the creation of new ranges that intersect with existing ones.

Targets & Filters

  • SL ATR Buffer: The extra distance added beyond the range boundary for the stop-loss.
  • TP R:R Multipliers: Customizable risk-to-reward ratios for the three take-profit levels.
  • Volume Breakout Filter: Requires above-average volume to confirm a breakout.
  • HTF Trend Filter: Limits signals to those aligned with a higher-timeframe moving average.

FAQ

How can I filter out weak breakout signals? You can increase the "Impulse Body Threshold" to require larger breakout candles or enable the "Volume Breakout Filter" and "HTF Trend Filter" to ensure the move has market-wide support.

Can I use this for scalping on lower timeframes? Yes. For lower timeframes (1M–5M), it is recommended to lower the "Squeeze Length" and "Min Squeeze Bars" while adjusting the "Impulse Body Threshold" to roughly 0.5 to capture quicker moves.

How do I access Smart Breakout Targets? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
