The MACD + Inside Bar indicator combines traditional momentum analysis with price action pattern detection to provide a comprehensive view of market trends and potential breakout points within a single workspace.

Usage

The indicator is used to identify both trend momentum via the Moving Average Convergence/Divergence (MACD) and periods of market consolidation via Inside Bar patterns.

  • Momentum Analysis: Users can monitor the MACD line and Signal line crossovers to identify potential trend reversals or continuations. The histogram provides a visual representation of the distance between the MACD and Signal lines, indicating the strength of the current move.
  • Price Action Detection: The script automatically highlights "Inside Bars"—candles where the high is lower than the previous candle's high and the low is higher than the previous candle's low. These patterns often precede significant volatility or breakouts.
  • Alerts: The tool includes built-in alert conditions for MACD crossovers and the appearance of Inside Bars, allowing for automated monitoring of specific technical setups.

Details

The script calculates the MACD using the difference between two Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs), typically a 12-period fast EMA and a 26-period slow EMA. A 9-period EMA of this difference is then calculated to form the Signal line.

The Inside Bar logic is determined by comparing the current bar's range against the range of the immediate preceding bar. When the current bar is fully "engulfed" by the previous bar's price range, it is flagged. This combination allows traders to see when a trend (MACD) is pausing or consolidating (Inside Bar), which can be useful for timing entries on breakouts in the direction of the prevailing trend.

Settings

  • Fast Length: The period for the shorter-term Exponential Moving Average used in the MACD calculation.
  • Slow Length: The period for the longer-term Exponential Moving Average used in the MACD calculation.
  • Signal Length: The smoothing period for the Signal line, calculated as an EMA of the MACD line.
  • Inside Bar Color: Allows the user to customize the color applied to the bars on the chart when an Inside Bar pattern is detected.

FAQ

How do I interpret the MACD crossovers alongside the Inside Bars? A MACD crossover indicates a shift in momentum, while an Inside Bar indicates a contraction in volatility. Traders often look for an Inside Bar to form during a strong MACD trend as a potential "high-tight flag" or continuation setup.

Can I change the EMA periods for different timeframes? Yes, the Fast, Slow, and Signal lengths are fully adjustable in the settings menu to accommodate different trading styles, such as scalping or swing trading.
