RSI & BB QQE Mod (highlight)
Oct 26, 2022

The RSI & BB QQE Mod (highlight) indicator provides a comprehensive trend-following and momentum analysis tool by combining the Relative Strength Index (RSI), Quantitative Qualitative Estimation (QQE), and Bollinger Bands (BB).
Usage
The indicator is primarily used to identify trend direction, strength, and potential market exhaustion points. Traders can interpret the signals based on the color-coded smoothed RSI line and background highlights:
- Trend Identification: A green smoothed RSI line indicates price is above the Upper Bollinger Band of the QQE basis, suggesting bullish momentum. Conversely, a red line indicates price is below the Lower Bollinger Band, suggesting bearish momentum.
- Volatility and Breakouts: The Bollinger Bands applied to the QQE basis help define relative "high" and "low" RSI levels. When the smoothed RSI breaks outside these bands, it triggers background highlights to signal potential volatility spikes or pivot points.
- Overbought/Oversold: The tool includes traditional RSI levels (default 20/80). If the smoothed RSI is both outside the Bollinger Bands and beyond these extreme levels, a secondary background highlight is triggered to signal a high-probability reversal or exhaustion zone.
Details
This script integrates three distinct technical concepts to filter market noise:
- Smoothed RSI: Reduces volatility in the RSI calculation to provide a clearer view of momentum.
- QQE (Quantitative Qualitative Estimation): Calculates a "Fast" and "Slow" trailing stop (the long/short bands) based on a smoothed ATR of the RSI. This serves as the foundation for the Bollinger Bands.
- Bollinger Bands on QQE: By applying Bollinger Bands to the trend basis derived from the QQE, the script creates dynamic thresholds that adapt to current market conditions rather than relying on static RSI levels alone.
Note: Due to the smoothing and multi-step calculation process, this indicator may exhibit lagging characteristics. It is generally recommended for use on higher timeframes to capture significant trend shifts.
Settings
Main Settings
- Source: Determines the price data used for the RSI calculation (e.g., Close, Open).
- RSI Length: The lookback period for the initial RSI calculation.
- RSI Smoothing: The period for the EMA smoothing applied to the RSI.
- Slow Factor: A multiplier used in the QQE calculation to determine the distance of the trailing bands.
- Oversold Level: The static threshold for oversold conditions (default 20).
- Overbought Level: The static threshold for overbought conditions (default 80).
- BB Length: The lookback period for the Bollinger Bands applied to the QQE basis.
- BB Multiplier: Controls the width of the Bollinger Bands.
- Opacity (fill & bgcolor): Adjusts the transparency of all visual fills and background highlights simultaneously.
FAQ
How do I use the background highlights?
Background highlights appear when the smoothed RSI crosses outside the dynamic Bollinger Bands. A single highlight indicates a volatility breakout, while a double-strength highlight indicates the RSI has also reached the static Overbought or Oversold levels.
Why does the indicator seem to lag behind price?
The indicator utilizes multiple layers of smoothing (EMA on RSI, ATR smoothing for QQE, and SMA for Bollinger Bands) to filter out market noise. While this provides cleaner signals, it inherently introduces some lag.
