The Bollinger Bands MTF & Kalman Filter tool combines multi-timeframe analysis with advanced noise reduction to provide a smoothed perspective on price trends and volatility.

Usage

This indicator combines Lower Timeframe (LTF) and Higher Timeframe (HTF) Bollinger Bands to help traders identify trend exhaustion and potential reversals.

  • Trend Identification: Use the HTF bands to establish the macro trend while the Kalman-filtered LTF bands track shorter-term price movements with reduced lag.
  • Momentum Analysis: The fill transparency between bands adjusts dynamically based on relative buy/sell volume. Darker, more opaque colors indicate stronger volume-backed momentum.
  • Reversal Signals:
    • Bullish Signal: Occurs when price has traded below the HTF lower band and the LTF lower band begins to slope upward.
    • Bearish Signal: Occurs when price has traded above the HTF upper band and the LTF upper band begins to slope downward.

Details

The script utilizes two distinct smoothing methods to optimize its output:

  1. Kalman Filter: Applied to the LTF bands, this adaptive algorithm minimizes noise and lag compared to traditional moving averages, making it highly effective for lower timeframe scalping or day trading.
  2. EMA Smoothing: The HTF bands are smoothed using an Exponential Moving Average to provide a clearer view of the macro trend without the "step" effect often seen in standard MTF indicators.
  3. Volume-Weighted Transparency: The opacity of the band fills is calculated by comparing buy and sell volume (determined by price action relative to the candle range) and smoothing the result with an EMA.

Settings

LTF Bollinger Bands

  • Multiplier: Adjusts the width of the Kalman-filtered bands based on standard deviation.
  • Length: Sets the lookback window for the LTF calculations.
  • Linewidth: Controls the thickness of the plotted LTF bands.
  • Plot BB: Toggles the visibility of the LTF bands.

HTF Bollinger Bands

  • Timeframe: Selects the higher timeframe for macro analysis (e.g., 15m, 1H, 4H).
  • Multiplier: Adjusts the width of the HTF bands.
  • Length: Sets the lookback window for the HTF calculations.
  • Display Signals: Toggles the triangle shapes indicating potential reversal points.

Gradient

  • Color Option: Choose between "Gradient" (volume-based), "Solid", or "None".
  • Opacity Max/Min: Defines the transparency range for the volume-based gradient.
  • Bullish/Bearish Color: Customizes the colors used for upward and downward momentum.

FAQ

How do I interpret the transparency changes? Higher opacity indicates higher relative volume in the direction of the move, suggesting stronger momentum. Fading opacity suggests weakening volume and potential exhaustion.

Why is there a warning about timeframes? The indicator is designed to show a Higher Timeframe (HTF) on a Lower Timeframe (LTF) chart. If your chart timeframe is higher than the selected HTF setting, a warning will appear.
