The Momentum Lifecycle Detector indicator is an early trend detection oscillator that tracks momentum through five lifecycle phases by analyzing directional indicator spread acceleration. It aims to identify momentum ignition before traditional signals and warn of trend exhaustion through integrated regime filters and curvature analysis.

Usage

The Usage section highlights how to interpret the oscillator and its lifecycle classifications for trend trading.

  • Momentum Phases: Monitor the bottom lifecycle band. Ignition (Cyan) indicates the birth of momentum, while Thrust and Prime represent young and mature trends. Fading (Orange) warns of trend death, and Dead (Gray) suggests range-bound conditions.
  • Oscillator Analysis: The main line changes color based on momentum strength. Bright green/red indicates strengthening momentum, while faded colors suggest weakening. Crossovers with the signal line (orange) can be used similarly to MACD for directional shifts.
  • Consolidation Breakouts: Watch for yellow boxes which signify "coiled" energy. A validated zone (solid border) breaking in a specific direction (teal for bullish, maroon for bearish) often precedes significant moves.
  • Reversal Warnings: Look for the "Atmosphere" glow. A green glow during a bearish move indicates bullish pressure is building from underneath, while a red glow during a bullish move suggests a potential top.

Details

The script utilizes several advanced mathematical concepts to reduce lag and provide leading signals:

  • DI Spread Acceleration: Instead of just measuring trend strength, the tool calculates the velocity and acceleration of the gap between +DI and -DI. This identifies trend "ignition" bars before traditional ADX crosses a threshold.
  • Gaussian-Weighted DI: Standard directional indicators treat all bars in a lookback equally. This script uses a Gaussian decay function to apply more weight to recent bars, making the data more responsive to current price action.
  • ZLEMA Smoothing: Both the momentum oscillator and ADX use Zero-Lag Exponential Moving Averages (ZLEMA) to compensate for the inherent lag found in standard EMA calculations.
  • Kaufman Efficiency Ratio (ER): This acts as a regime filter, determining if the market is moving efficiently or is too choppy for directional strategies.

Settings

Core Momentum Oscillator

  • Fast ZLEMA Length: The period for the fast-moving average responsiveness.
  • Slow ZLEMA Length: The baseline period used to calculate momentum.
  • Signal Line Length: The smoothing period for the signal line EMA.
  • ATR Period: Used for normalization to ensure consistency across different assets.

Consolidation Zones

  • Histogram Sensitivity: Controls how tight the momentum-signal gap must be to trigger a zone.
  • Minimum Bars: The minimum duration required to validate a consolidation zone.
  • Drift Tolerance: The maximum price drift allowed before a zone is invalidated.

Momentum Lifecycle

  • DI Calculation Length: Period for Gaussian-weighted directional indicators.
  • State Inertia: The number of bars a phase must persist before the lifecycle officially transitions, preventing flickering.
  • ADX Strong Threshold: The level above which a trend is considered established (Prime).

FAQ

How do I interpret the Dashboard? The dashboard provides a "Momentum Weather Report," summarizing the current lifecycle Phase, Birth status (acceleration), Flow (bias), and overall Weather (trading favorability).

What timeframes are best for this tool? The indicator is ATR-normalized and works on all timeframes. Default settings are optimized for Daily and 4-hour charts, but noise reduction settings can be increased for lower timeframes like the 5m or 15m.

How can I access the Momentum Lifecycle Detector? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
