The VWAP Trendfollow Strategy tool provides an experimental systematic approach to trend-following by combining Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) breakouts with standard deviation bands and a directional trend filter. It aims to capture momentum shifts while filtering out low-probability signals during non-trending environments.

Usage

The strategy generates signals based on price interactions with the VWAP bands:

  • Long Entries: Triggered when the price crosses above the upper standard deviation band.
  • Short Entries: Triggered when the price crosses below the lower standard deviation band.
  • Trend Filter: When enabled via the "Only Enter on Matched Trends" setting, the strategy will only take long trades if the VWAP itself is trending upward, and short trades if the VWAP is trending downward. This is designed to reduce false breakouts during mean-reverting or choppy market conditions.
  • Exits: The script includes exit logic for take-profit scenarios when price crosses secondary band levels, or it can reverse position when an opposing signal is generated.

Details

The strategy is built upon the concept that breakouts beyond standard deviation bands from the VWAP often signify the start of a new trend. To improve the win rate of this typically low-frequency breakout style, the script employs a trend filter based on the slope or directional movement of the VWAP line.

While optimized for lower timeframes, the strategy is versatile across various asset classes including equities, forex, and crypto. Users are encouraged to factor in slippage and commissions when evaluating backtest results, as the high frequency of signals on lower timeframes can significantly impact net profitability.

Settings

FAQ

How do I use the Trend Filter effectively?

The "Only Enter on Matched Trends" setting is best used in markets with clear directional bias. Disabling it may increase the number of trades but may also lead to more whipsaws in sideways markets.

What is the best timeframe for this strategy?

The strategy was originally designed for lower timeframes (intraday), but the anchor period can be adjusted to suit swing trading on daily or weekly charts.
