RSI Cave
Dec 10, 2018

The RSI Cave indicator provides a visual representation of Relative Strength Index (RSI) levels directly on the price chart, allowing traders to identify overbought and oversold conditions without needing a separate oscillator pane.
Usage
The RSI Cave tool is used to identify potential price reversals or exhaustion points by projecting RSI thresholds as dynamic bands on the chart. When price enters the upper "cave" boundary, it indicates an overbought condition (historically correlating with an RSI above 71). Conversely, when price enters the lower boundary, it indicates an oversold condition (RSI below 29).
Traders can use these visual boundaries to:
- Identify potential shorting opportunities when price touches or penetrates the upper band.
- Identify potential buying opportunities when price touches or penetrates the lower band.
- Gauge the current trend strength relative to the centerline (RSI Moving Average).
Details
The script functions by back-calculating the price level required to reach specific RSI values. This transformation moves the RSI from a sub-pane oscillator to an overlay indicator. The "cave" effect is created using a series of histogram plots that fill the space above the upper band and below the lower band, creating a visual "boundary" that price interacts with. This implementation builds upon concepts of RSI bands originally explored by technical analysts like LazyBear.
Settings
- RSI Overbought: Defines the upper RSI threshold (default is 71) used to calculate the upper price band.
- RSI Oversold: Defines the lower RSI threshold (default is 29) used to calculate the lower price band.
- RSI Length: The lookback period used for the RSI calculation (default is 14).
- Highlight Extremes: When enabled, changes the color of the bands/cave when price successfully touches or exceeds the overbought or oversold levels.
- Hide Gray: Allows the user to remove the neutral gray background of the cave for a cleaner chart aesthetic.
FAQ
How do I interpret price touching the "Cave"?
When price touches the upper green-highlighted area, the RSI has reached the overbought level. When it touches the lower red-highlighted area, the RSI has reached the oversold level.
Can I change the sensitivity of the bands?
Yes, by adjusting the "RSI Length" or the "Overbought/Oversold" levels in the settings, you can make the bands more or less reactive to price volatility.
