EMA-WMA ADX Trading Strategy
Jun 13, 2023

The EMA-WMA ADX Trading Strategy indicator provides a trend-following framework that combines moving average crossovers with trend strength filtering and RSI reversal signals. By analyzing the relationship between the Exponential Moving Average (EMA) and Weighted Moving Average (WMA), alongside the Average Directional Index (ADX), the tool identifies potential market entries while categorizing their strength based on momentum.
Usage
The script is primarily used to identify trend shifts and momentum-based reversals.
- Trend Entries: Buy signals are generated when the EMA crosses above the WMA, provided the ADX is above a user-defined threshold. Conversely, sell signals occur when the EMA crosses below the WMA with the ADX above the threshold.
- Signal Strength: Signals are labeled as "Strong" if the ADX is currently rising, indicating increasing trend momentum. Signals are labeled as "Weak" if the ADX is falling, suggesting the trend might be losing steam.
- RSI Reversals: The indicator also plots "Reversal" labels based on RSI levels and slope. A bullish reversal is identified when the RSI crosses above the bullish level with a positive slope, while a bearish reversal is identified when the RSI crosses below the bearish level with a negative slope.
Details
The strategy relies on three core components:
- Trend Tracking: The crossover of a shorter-period EMA and a longer-period WMA acts as the primary trend direction filter.
- Trend Strength: The ADX (Average Directional Index) is used to ensure the strategy only signals during periods of sufficient market movement. The rising or falling state of the ADX provides secondary confirmation of momentum.
- Mean Reversion: The inclusion of RSI reversal logic helps identify potential exhaustion points or trend changes when the price moves out of extreme levels.
Settings
- EMA Length: Determines the lookback period for the Exponential Moving Average.
- WMA Length: Determines the lookback period for the Weighted Moving Average.
- ADX Length: Sets the period for the Average Directional Index calculation.
- ADX Threshold: The minimum ADX value required to validate a trend signal.
- RSI Length: The lookback period for the Relative Strength Index.
- Bullish Level: The RSI level used to trigger bullish reversal signals.
- Bearish Level: The RSI level used to trigger bearish reversal signals.
- RSI Slope Periods: The number of bars used to calculate the RSI slope to confirm reversal direction.
FAQ
How do I use the strong vs weak signals?
Strong signals occur when the ADX is rising, indicating the trend is gaining strength. Weak signals suggest that while a crossover has occurred, the overall trend strength might be declining.
What do the reversal labels mean?
Reversal labels indicate that the RSI has exited an oversold or overbought area with momentum, suggesting a potential change in price direction independent of the EMA/WMA crossover.
