Range Filter - B&S Signals
Mar 15, 2022

The Range Filter - B&S Signals indicator provides a streamlined trend-following framework designed to identify market swings and potential entry points using a dynamic price filtering mechanism. By calculating a range size based on EMA-derived volatility, the tool generates trend bands that help traders visualize bullish and bearish momentum shifts.
Usage
The tool is primarily used to identify trend reversals and entry signals. When the price breaks above the filter range and satisfies the upward momentum conditions, a "BUY" signal is plotted. Conversely, when the price breaks below the filter and downward momentum is confirmed, a "SELL" signal is plotted.
The strategy implementation within the script uses these signals in conjunction with a 200-period EMA filter to ensure trades are only taken in the direction of the long-term trend (buys above the EMA, sells below the EMA). Traders can use the integrated take-profit and stop-loss visual logic to manage their risk per trade.
Details
The Range Filter is a variation of the classic "Range Filter" concept originally developed by DonovanWall. It operates by calculating a target range size using a double EMA of the absolute price changes over a specific period. This range value determines the positioning of the high and low bands.
The script includes:
- Trend Filtering: A long-term EMA acts as a directional filter to minimize false signals in counter-trend environments.
- Momentum Detection: Signals are generated based on the interaction between the source price and the filter line, ensuring the trend direction has clearly shifted before a label appears.
- Strategy Components: The script includes backtesting parameters such as specific date ranges, percentage-based stop losses, and take profits.
Settings
Backtest Range
- Backtest Start: Sets the start date and time for the strategy backtest.
- Backtest End: Sets the end date and time for the strategy backtest.
Strategy Parameters
- Long/Short Stop Loss (%): Defines the percentage-based stop loss for long and short positions.
- Long/Short Take (%): Defines the percentage-based take profit target for long and short positions.
Indicator Parameters
- EMA Length: Sets the period for the trend-filtering Exponential Moving Average.
- Swing Source: The price source used for the filter calculations (default is Close).
- Swing Period: Determines the lookback period for the range size calculation.
- Swing Multiplier: A multiplier applied to the volatility range to adjust the sensitivity of the filter.
- Bar Colors On/Off: Toggles the script's ability to color bars based on the detected trend.
FAQ
How do I interpret the Range Filter - B&S Signals?
Green zones and "BUY" labels indicate bullish momentum, while red zones and "SELL" labels indicate bearish momentum. Signals are most effective when they align with the 200-period EMA.
What do the high and low bands represent?
The bands represent the volatility-adjusted range. When price escapes these bands, it suggests a significant shift in the current price action range, often leading to a new trend.
