The Johnny's Moving Average Ribbon indicator provides a comprehensive visual representation of market momentum and trend direction by plotting a series of dynamic moving averages. This tool enables traders to identify trend strength and potential exhaustion points through color-coded transitions and multi-period analysis.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on how the ribbon's color dynamics and moving average selection assist in market analysis. Traders can use the indicator for:

  • Trend Identification: The predominant color of the ribbon indicates the current market bias. A lime green ribbon suggests a strong uptrend, while a ruby red ribbon indicates a strong downtrend.
  • Momentum Shifts: Color changes within the ribbon signal shifts in momentum. For instance, a transition from red to maroon may indicate bearish exhaustion or a potential short reentry point.
  • Reentry and Reversals: Green signals suggest potential reentry points for downtrends or warnings of an uptrend reversal, while maroon signals suggest potential reentry points for uptrends or bearish reversals.
  • MA Type Selection: Users can toggle between Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) for faster response to price action or Simple Moving Averaged (SMA) for a smoother, more traditional trend-following approach.

Details

The indicator is a Pine Script v5 adaptation of the original Madrid Moving Average Ribbon. It constructs a "ribbon" using 16 distinct moving averages ranging from 15 to 90 periods, with a 100-period moving average acting as the primary reference point.

The script evaluates the relationship between each individual moving average line and the 100-period reference MA. The logic is as follows:

  • Uptrend (Lime Green): MA is rising and above the reference MA.
  • Uptrend Reentry/Warning (Maroon): MA is rising but remains below the reference MA.
  • Downtrend (Ruby Red): MA is falling and below the reference MA.
  • Downtrend Reentry/Warning (Green): MA is falling but remains above the reference MA.

Settings

  • Exponential MA: A toggle to switch the calculation method for all ribbon lines. When enabled, the script uses EMAs; when disabled, it defaults to SMAs.

FAQ

How do I use the color signals for trading?

Lime green and ruby red represent established trends (long and short respectively). Maroon and green indicate counter-trend momentum or potential reentry points where the price is moving back toward the primary long-term trend.

What is the significance of the 100-period MA?

The 100-period MA serves as the baseline for the entire ribbon. The color of every other line in the ribbon is determined by its position and slope relative to this specific reference point.
