RVSI & MACD Confluence Background
Dec 16, 2020

The RVSI & MACD Confluence Background indicator identifies potential bullish and bearish trends by analyzing the synergy between price momentum and volume flow to highlight high-probability market regimes.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to filter market noise and identify trend direction. This tool is primarily used as a trend filter, coloring the chart background based on the alignment of two distinct calculation methods.
- Bullish Trend: A green background indicates that both the Relative Volume Strength Index (RVSI) and the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) are in bullish alignment. Traders often interpret this as a signal to look for long entries or to maintain existing long positions.
- Bearish Trend: A red background signifies that both metrics are in bearish alignment. This suggests a prevailing downward trend, which traders may use to identify short opportunities.
- Neutral State: When the background is uncolored, it indicates a lack of confluence between price and volume. This typically occurs during range-bound markets or trend transitions, suggesting that traders should exercise caution or consider exiting active trades until a clear trend resumes.
Details
This indicator functions by combining price action data with volume-based strength. It utilizes a modified Relative Volume Strength Index (RVSI), originally conceptualized by "fract," which calculates the cumulative volume of price changes. By applying fast and slow moving averages to the RVSI, the script generates a volume-based oscillator.
Simultaneously, a standard MACD is calculated using the same fast and slow lookback lengths. Because the MACD is derived strictly from price action and the RVSI is derived strictly from volume, their confluence provides a robust validation of the current market move. The script normalizes these signals and checks if they share the same sign (both positive or both negative). If a confluence is found, the background is colored to reflect the shared direction.
Settings
- Volume Length: Sets the lookback period for the exponential moving average used in the initial volume calculation.
- RVSI Length: Determines the period for the Relative Strength Index applied to the volume data.
- Fast Length: The period for the fast moving average used in both the RVSI and MACD calculations.
- Slow Length: The period for the slow moving average used in both the RVSI and MACD calculations.
- Source: The price input used for the MACD calculation (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
- Signal Smoothing: Sets the length for the MACD signal line smoothing.
- Simple MA (Oscillator): When enabled, uses Simple Moving Averages (SMA) instead of Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) for the MACD line calculation.
- Simple MA (Signal Line): When enabled, uses an SMA for the MACD signal line instead of an EMA.
FAQ
How do I interpret the uncolored areas on the chart? Uncolored areas represent "no confluence." This means that either price momentum and volume strength are contradicting each other, or the trend is too weak to provide a definitive signal.
Can I change the sensitivity of the signals? Yes, by adjusting the Fast and Slow lengths, you can make the indicator more or less responsive to market fluctuations. Shorter lengths increase sensitivity, while longer lengths filter out more noise.
How do I get access to the RVSI & MACD Confluence Background? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
