True vs False Breakout (Vol + Body Shape)
Dec 12, 2025

The True vs False Breakout (Vol + Body Shape) indicator is a technical analysis tool designed to assess the quality of price breakouts by evaluating the confluence of price action, candlestick geometry, and volume participation.
Usage
The indicator classifies breakouts into three distinct categories to help traders distinguish between high-probability trend continuations and potential bull traps:
- True Breakout (Green Arrow): This signal appears when the price closes above a historical resistance level with high relative volume and a strong candle body (minimal upper wick). This suggests high-confidence bullish momentum.
- Weak Breakout (Grey Dot): This appears when the price breaks resistance but fails to meet the volume or candle quality requirements. This indicates a lack of conviction, warning traders not to chase the move.
- False Breakout (Red Label): This signal triggers when a breakout attempt is immediately followed by bearish price action that closes back below the resistance level. It serves as a reversal signal and a potential shorting opportunity.
Traders can use these signals to filter entries, ensuring they only participate in moves with significant institutional backing while avoiding "liquidity grabs" at key levels.
Details
The indicator identifies breakout levels by looking back at the highest price over a user-defined period. To determine the quality of a breakout, it calculates:
- Body Ratio: The proportion of the candle body relative to its total range. A high ratio indicates strong directional pressure.
- Wick Ratio: The size of the upper wick relative to the total range. A small upper wick suggests the bulls maintained control until the close.
- Volume Multiplier: The current volume is compared against a Simple Moving Average (SMA) of volume to ensure the move is supported by increased trading activity.
Settings
Resistance Settings
- Lookback Period: Determines the number of bars used to calculate the resistance level (historical high).
Volume Filtering
- Volume Multiplier: Sets the threshold for how much higher the breakout volume must be compared to the average (e.g., 1.5x).
- Average Volume Period: The lookback period used to calculate the average volume.
Candle Quality
- Min Body Ratio: The minimum percentage of the candle that must be the "body" for it to be considered strong.
- Max Wick Ratio: The maximum allowable percentage for the upper wick to prevent "rejection" shapes from triggering a true breakout.
Filters
- Show RSI Overbought: An optional visual aid to identify if the market is extended when a breakout occurs.
