The SP_Relative Strength Index indicator provides a specialized implementation of the RSI oscillator designed to identify trading setups based on the Steve Primo methodologies. This tool streamlines the identification of specific overbought and oversold zones used in various trading strategies, specifically Strategy #1 and Strategy #8.

Usage

The indicator can be used to identify momentum shifts and exhaustion points according to specific technical strategies:

  • Strategy #8: Focuses on the 50-level threshold. Traders often look for the RSI to cross this median line to confirm trend direction or momentum shifts.
  • Strategy #1: Utilizes specific bands for overbought and oversold conditions. The indicator highlights the 25-35 range as an oversold zone and the 65-75 range as an overbought zone. Traders look for price to enter and subsequently exit these zones to find potential reversal points.

Details

The SP_Relative Strength Index is calculated using a 5-period Relative Strength Index (RSI). Unlike the standard 14-period RSI, this faster calculation is more sensitive to recent price action, allowing for the identification of short-term momentum extremes.

The visual layout includes:

  • A central threshold at 50 for trend confirmation.
  • Shaded bands between 25 and 35 (Oversold).
  • Shaded bands between 65 and 75 (Overbought).

The script also includes built-in alert conditions for crosses over these critical levels, enabling automated notifications when setups occur.

Settings

As this is a specialized "plug-and-play" tool based on fixed strategy parameters, there are no user-adjustable input variables. The core calculation is fixed to a 5-period length to maintain consistency with the intended strategies.

The following visual elements are available in the Style tab:

  • Steve Primo - RSI: Adjust the color and thickness of the main RSI line.
  • Strategy #8 - Threshold Line: Customize the appearance of the 50-level line.
  • Strategy #1 Levels: Customize the colors for the 25, 35, 65, and 75 levels and their respective fills.

FAQ

How do I interpret the shaded zones?

The shaded green zone (25-35) represents an oversold area used for Strategy #1, while the shaded red zone (65-75) represents the overbought area. A cross back into the neutral zone often signals a potential trade entry.

What is the significance of the 50 line?

The 50 line is the primary focus for Strategy #8. It acts as a momentum filter; when the RSI is above 50, momentum is considered bullish, and when below, it is considered bearish.
