The Ultimate RSI indicator is a comprehensive momentum oscillator that integrates Bollinger Bands and automated divergence detection to identify market reversals and trend shifts. It provides traders with a multi-layered view of RSI movement, utilizing smoothing techniques and customizable moving averages to filter market noise and highlight high-probability entry points.

Usage

The Ultimate RSI can be used to identify trend exhaustion and momentum shifts through several visual components:

  • Bollinger Band Interaction: Traders can monitor when the RSI line (white by default) crosses outside the Bollinger Bands and subsequently crosses back over the yellow Basis line (moving average). These crosses often signal potential buy or sell opportunities.
  • Divergence Detection: The script automatically plots bullish and bearish divergences between price action and the RSI. These signals highlight instances where price makes new extremes while momentum fails to follow, indicating a weakening trend.
  • RSI Zones: Colored background fills represent different RSI levels. A yellow zone (default 45-55) typically indicates a sideways or stagnant market where momentum is neutral, suggesting that traders should exercise caution.
  • Dynamic Smoothing: By enabling Heikin Ashi smoothing or standard MA smoothing, the RSI line becomes more stable, making it easier to identify the core direction of momentum without the interference of minor price fluctuations.

Details

The script enhances the standard Relative Strength Index by applying volatility-based envelopes (Bollinger Bands) directly to the oscillator. Unlike standard RSI which uses fixed levels (e.g., 30/70), this tool adapts to current volatility.

A unique feature is the Moving Average Crossover Cycle, which utilizes dynamic transparency. When the RSI crosses its basis or additional moving averages, the lines pulse or fade based on the number of bars since the last cross. This provides a visual cue for how "fresh" or "overdue" a momentum signal might be. The calculation supports various MA types (SMA, EMA, WMA, RMA) for both the RSI calculation and its smoothing layers.

Settings

Toggles

  • Show RSI Zone fill colors: Enables or disables the background colors for different RSI levels.
  • Show Bollinger Bands: Toggles the visibility of the volatility bands surrounding the RSI.
  • Show RSI Bands MA: Displays the central basis line of the Bollinger Bands.
  • Show Background Colors: Highlights areas where the RSI is outside the Bollinger Bands.

RSI Settings

  • RSI Source/Length: Adjusts the input data and lookback period for the RSI.
  • MA Type to calculate RSI: Selects the smoothing method for the internal RSI calculation.
  • Enable Smoothing: Applies an additional moving average to the RSI line to reduce noise.
  • Heiken Ashi Smoothing: Uses Heikin Ashi price data for the RSI calculation to produce a cleaner oscillator line.

RSI Bollinger Bands and Basis

  • RSI Moving Average Type/Length: Sets the parameters for the Bollinger Band central line.
  • RSI Bollinger Band Multiplier: Adjusts the width of the bands based on standard deviation.

Moving Average Crossover Cycle

  • RSI Cycle Line Transparency: Toggles the dynamic fading effect for crossover lines.
  • Bars for cycle fade out: Determines the duration of the transparency animation.

FAQ

How do I interpret the yellow zone on the RSI? The yellow zone typically represents a "no-trade" or neutral area where price lacks clear momentum. It is often used to identify range-bound markets.

What does the transparency effect on the lines mean? The dynamic transparency indicates the time elapsed since the last crossover. As the line fades or changes color, it visually signals that a new momentum shift may be approaching or that the current trend is maturing.
