The Momentum Play indicator is a comprehensive technical analysis tool designed to identify and confirm trend momentum by synthesizing exponential moving averages, RSI, ADX, and volume data into a single cohesive interface.

Usage

The Momentum Play indicator serves as a multi-filter confirmation system for swing traders. It evaluates the market state based on trend direction, strength, and price action relative to recent extremes.

Bullish Momentum Identification: A strong bullish environment is typically characterized by the following concurrent conditions:

  • The Fast EMA (default 8) is above the Slow EMA (default 35) and trending upward.
  • The current candle close is higher than the previous 5-session high.
  • The RSI is above the designated high trigger (default 60).
  • Current volume exceeds the 5-session average volume.
  • The ADX is above the threshold (default 20), indicating a trending market.

Bearish Momentum Identification: A strong bearish environment is typically characterized by:

  • The Fast EMA is below the Slow EMA and trending downward.
  • The current candle close is lower than the previous 5-session low.
  • The RSI is below the designated low trigger (default 40).
  • Current volume exceeds the 5-session average volume.
  • The ADX is above the threshold (default 20).

The script includes a dashboard table that provides real-time values for these metrics, color-coded to reflect their current status relative to the momentum thresholds.

Details

The indicator combines several classic technical concepts:

  • Trend Filter: Uses an EMA crossover logic to determine the primary trend direction.
  • Momentum Oscillator: Employs a Relative Strength Index (RSI) with a smoothed EMA/WMA signal line for noise reduction.
  • Trend Strength: Incorporates the Average Directional Index (ADX) to filter out sideways or choppy markets.
  • Volatility/Breakout: Uses 5-period high/low comparisons and volume averages to ensure price action is supported by activity and breaking out of immediate ranges.

Settings

  • Fast EMA: Sets the period for the short-term exponential moving average.
  • Slow EMA: Sets the period for the long-term exponential moving average.
  • Show ADX: Toggles the visibility of the ADX line in the oscillator pane.
  • ADX Smoothing/DI Length: Adjusts the lookback periods for the ADX calculation.
  • ADX Threshold: The level above which the market is considered to be trending.
