PSAR-Support Resistance
Feb 8, 2023

The PSAR-Support Resistance indicator tool identifies dynamic reversal points in price to create horizontal support and resistance levels, helping traders filter false Parabolic SAR signals and identify breakout opportunities.
Usage
The Usage section focuses on how to interpret the dynamic levels and signals generated by the script.
- Support and Resistance Levels: The indicator plots horizontal lines based on the price at the moment of a Parabolic SAR reversal. These levels act as a zone where price often moves sideways.
- Breakout Trading: Traders can look for price action that closes above the green resistance line or below the red support line. A new candle formation outside these boundaries suggests a shift in momentum.
- Signal Confirmation: While the tool provides "Buy" and "Sell" labels based on the PSAR flip, these should be used in conjunction with the S/R lines.
- Moving Average Crossovers: The tool includes two customizable moving averages. A "MA Buy" triangle appears when a shorter MA crosses above a longer MA while the MACD histogram is positive, providing secondary trend confirmation.
Details
The script construction utilizes the ta.sar function to determine price direction. When the PSAR switches position (a reversal), the script captures the current price and extends it forward as a horizontal line. This method aims to eliminate the "whipsaw" effect often found in trending indicators by requiring price to breach historical reversal points before confirming a new trend. The implementation also allows for multi-timeframe analysis, enabling users to see S/R levels from higher timeframes on their current chart.
Settings
- S/R Timeframe: Determines the timeframe used to calculate the Parabolic SAR and resulting support/resistance levels.
- Shift S/R Forward/Backward: Offsets the horizontal S/R lines on the X-axis.
- Start / Increment / Maximum: Standard Parabolic SAR parameters that control the sensitivity and acceleration of the SAR calculation.
- Moving Average Length (1 & 2): Sets the period for the two trend-following lines.
- Moving Average Type (1 & 2): Allows users to choose between EMA, SMA, WMA, or HMA for the crossover logic.
FAQ
How do I use the PSAR-Support Resistance levels?
The levels represent the price at the last trend reversal. They are best used to identify breakouts; a bullish signal is stronger when price closes above the Resistance line, and a bearish signal is stronger when price closes below the Support line.
What do the triangles on the chart represent?
The small triangles represent Moving Average crossovers confirmed by the MACD histogram. A green triangle indicates a bullish crossover with positive momentum, while a red triangle indicates a bearish cross with negative momentum.
