The WaveRider Momentum Oscillator indicator models market price momentum using principles of fluid dynamics to provide a more adaptive and nuanced view of trend strength and acceleration.

Usage

The WaveRider Momentum Oscillator is designed to help traders identify momentum shifts, potential breakouts, and market reversals.

  • Momentum Gradient: The oscillator line changes color based on acceleration. Green hues indicate positive acceleration (bullish favor), red hues signal negative acceleration (bearish favor), and yellow/neutral hues represent consolidation.
  • Oscillator Slope: An upward slope reflects strengthening momentum, while a downward slope indicates weakening momentum.
  • Pivot Labels: The tool automatically identifies local momentum peaks (▼) and troughs (▲). Troughs can signal potential entry points, while peaks can signal profit-taking zones or short opportunities.
  • Thresholds: Overbought (+50) and Oversold (-50) levels are plotted to help identify extreme momentum conditions.

Details

This script moves beyond traditional static momentum calculations by applying concepts from fluid mechanics:

  • Velocity: Modeled by measuring the rate of price change over a specified period.
  • Viscosity: Modeled based on volatility. High volatility increases "viscosity," which adds a damping effect to the momentum signals to filter out market noise and false signals.
  • Turbulence: Detects rapid acceleration bursts, allowing the indicator to highlight sharp shifts in momentum that standard oscillators might miss.

The final output is normalized and smoothed using a hyperbolic tangent function (tanh) for the gradient mapping, ensuring a clear and intuitive visual representation of market flow.

Settings

  • Flow Length: Sets the period for the initial Rate of Change (ROC) and volatility calculations.
  • Viscosity Smoothing: Adjusts the smoothing applied to the flow velocity calculation.
  • Turbulence Length: Determines the lookback period for detecting momentum acceleration bursts.
  • Volatility Influence: Controls how much the market's "viscosity" (volatility) affects the momentum damping.
  • Final Smoothing: The length of the EMA applied to the final normalized oscillator values.
  • Pivot Lookback: The number of bars used to identify local maxima and minima for pivot label placement.

FAQ

How do I use the WaveRider Momentum Oscillator?

You can use the oscillator to confirm trend direction via the line's color and slope, identify overextended markets using the +/- 50 levels, and spot potential reversal points using the automated pivot labels.

What do the red and green colors signify?

The colors represent acceleration rather than just price direction. Green indicates the momentum is speeding up, while red indicates momentum is slowing down or reversing.
