RSI-Histo-Entry
Apr 25, 2018

The RSI-Histo-Entry indicator provides a multi-timeframe approach to momentum trading by visualizing the relationship between the RSI (or MFI) and its moving average through a smoothed histogram. This tool aims to identify early trend reversals and high-probability entry signals by filtering noise out of standard oscillator readings.
Usage
The Usage section focuses on interpreting the histogram and its smoothed average to identify market shifts.
- Histogram Analysis: The histogram represents the distance between the base indicator (RSI/MFI) and its EMA. When the histogram is positive, it indicates bullish momentum relative to the average; when negative, it suggests bearish momentum.
- Entry Signals: Users can look for crossovers of the smoothed signal line (RSI - MA) against the zero level. A crossover above zero suggests a bullish entry, while a crossunder indicates a bearish entry.
- Trend Coloring: The tool can color price bars based on multiple logic modes, such as histogram slope or overbought/oversold bias, allowing for trend alignment directly on the price chart.
- Multi-Timeframe (MTF) Context: By unchecking the "Use Current Chart Resolution" box, traders can project momentum data from higher timeframes onto their current chart to ensure they are trading in the direction of the macro trend.
Details
The script functions by calculating either the Relative Strength Index (RSI) or the Money Flow Index (MFI) based on user selection. It then calculates an Exponential Moving Average (EMA) of this value. The difference between the raw indicator and its EMA forms the basis of the histogram. To provide "early" signals with reduced lag, a second smoothing layer is applied to the histogram itself. This dual-layer smoothing helps in identifying momentum shifts before the raw RSI reaches traditional extreme levels.
Settings
- Use Current Chart Resolution?: When enabled, the indicator uses the timeframe of the current chart.
- Use Different Timeframe?: Specifies the timeframe for calculation if the current resolution box is unchecked.
- Base Indicator: Choose between 1 (RSI) or 2 (MFI) as the underlying momentum source.
- RSI/MFI Length: The lookback period for the base oscillator calculation.
- Smoothing Length: The period used to smooth the resulting histogram.
- Overbought/Oversold: Threshold levels (default 70/30) for visual background and line color changes.
- Show RSI or MFI line: Toggles the visibility of the primary oscillator line (offset by 50 for centering).
- Color bars based on: Selection of 5 different modes for price bar coloring, including histogram slope, +/- zero levels, or trend bias.
FAQ
How do I interpret the histogram colors?
The histogram uses bright colors (Light Green/Red) to signify momentum moving in the direction of the trend and darker shades to indicate potential exhaustion or weakening momentum.
Can I use this for volume-based analysis?
Yes, by changing the "Base Indicator" setting to 2 (MFI), the script will incorporate volume data into the momentum calculations.
