CM_Stochastic Highlight Bars
Oct 26, 2014

The CM_Stochastic Highlight Bars indicator visualizes overbought and oversold Stochastic conditions directly on the price chart through bar coloring, background highlights, and signal labels.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify momentum shifts and exhaustion points without needing a separate oscillator pane. Traders can use the tool to identify specific Stochastic crossovers or zone penetrations based on the following configurations:
- Trend Exhaustion: By enabling price bar or background highlights, users can see when the %K line is holding above the upper line (overbought) or below the lower line (oversold).
- Strict Reversals: The "Strict Criteria" settings highlight instances where a Stochastic crossover occurs specifically while the lines are within the extreme overbought/oversold thresholds, signaling a potential high-probability reversal.
- Momentum Shifts: The "Any Cross" settings provide signals for every Stochastic crossover, regardless of whether they occur in the extreme zones, useful for tracking general trend changes.
Details
The script calculates the Stochastic %K and %D lines using standard smoothing methods. The core logic differentiates between "Zone" conditions and "Crossover" conditions.
- Zone Monitoring: The script checks if %K is greater than the Upper Line (default 80) or less than the Lower Line (default 20).
- Strict Crossovers: A bullish strict cross is defined as the %K crossing over %D while both were previously below the Lower Line. A bearish strict cross is defined as the %K crossing under %D while both were previously above the Upper Line.
- General Crossovers: These are standard crossovers between %K and %D that occur anywhere on the oscillator scale.
Settings
- Length for Stochastic: Determines the lookback period for the initial Stochastic calculation.
- SmoothK for Stochastic: Sets the smoothing factor for the %K line.
- SmoothD for Stochastic: Sets the moving average period used to calculate the %D signal line.
- Upper Line Value?: Defines the overbought threshold (e.g., 80).
- Lower Line Value?: Defines the oversold threshold (e.g., 20).
- Show Price Bar highlight When Stoch is Above/Below High/Low Lines?: Colors the price bars green (oversold) or red (overbought) based on the current zone.
- Show Background highlight When Stoch is Above/Below High/Low Lines?: Fills the chart background color when the Stochastic is in extreme zones.
- Show Back Ground Highlights When Stoch Cross - Strict Criteria: Highlights the background only when a crossover occurs within the overbought or oversold zones.
- Show 'B' and 'S' Letters When Stoch Crosses High/Low Line & D?: Plots "B" for buy and "S" for sell labels for strict crossovers.
- Show Back Ground Highlights When Stoch Cross - Any Cross?: Highlights the background for every %K/%D crossover.
- Show 'B' and 'S' Letters When Stoch Crosses - Any Cross?: Plots labels for every %K/%D crossover.
FAQ
How do I interpret the "B" and "S" labels?
"B" indicates a bullish crossover (Buy) and "S" indicates a bearish crossover (Sell). Depending on your settings, these will either show for every cross or only for those occurring in overbought/oversold zones.
Can I use this on any timeframe?
Yes, the Stochastic calculation adapts to the timeframe of the chart it is applied to, though higher timeframes typically yield more reliable reversal signals.
How do I access this tool?
