Frequency and Volume Profile
Jul 3, 2024

The Frequency and Volume Profile indicator visualizes price levels with significant trading activity by plotting a frequency or volume-based distribution relative to visible chart data. This tool helps traders identify key areas of interest, market equilibrium, and potential support or resistance zones based on historical participation.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to interpret market structure and volume distribution.
- Market Structure Analysis: By observing the peaks in the profile, traders can identify high-activity zones. These levels often act as significant support and resistance areas because they represent prices where a large number of transactions occurred.
- Volume Analysis: When set to "Volume" mode, the indicator highlights price levels with the highest trading volume. This helps distinguish between price levels that were simply visited frequently and those that saw heavy institutional or retail participation.
- Trend Confirmation: A concentrated profile (narrow distribution) often indicates a consolidating market, while a distributed profile can confirm the strength of a trend. The Point of Control (POC)—the price level with the highest activity—serves as a primary pivot for trend analysis.
- Frequency Distribution: In "Frequency" mode, the script functions as a statistical histogram, showing the count of price occurrences within specific bins to visualize the time-price opportunity distribution.
Details
The script dynamically calculates the distribution using the visible bars on the chart. It divides the price range between the highest and lowest visible points into 500 discrete bins.
For the Frequency calculation, the script increments the bin value whenever the price source crosses a bin's threshold. For the Volume calculation, the script uses normalized volume data to weigh the activity at specific price levels. The indicator includes an automated alert system that triggers when the current price crosses the Point of Control (POC), signaling a shift in market sentiment relative to the highest area of activity.
Settings
Frequency Profile
- Source: Determines the price data used for the profile calculation (e.g., hl2, close).
- Offset: Sets the number of bars to the right to shift the profile visualization, preventing it from overlapping recent price action.
- Frequency/Volume: Switches the calculation mode between the count of price hits (Frequency) or the intensity of trading (Volume).
Levels
- HeatMap: When enabled, projects the activity levels across the chart background as a heatmap.
- Color Intense High Values: Adjusts the transparency and intensity of the heatmap colors based on the concentration of activity.
Visual
- Profile Color: Customizes the color used for the profile histogram and heatmap elements.
FAQ
How do I interpret the Point of Control (POC)? The POC is the price level with the longest bar in the profile. It represents the price where the most trading activity occurred, often serving as a magnet for price or a strong level of support/resistance.
Why does the script show a "Not Enough Bars" warning? This occurs when the lookback period exceeds the available historical data on your current timeframe. Switching to a lower timeframe or increasing the bars on the chart can resolve this.
