Combined Momentum MA (Equal-Length EMA/SMA Crossover)
Feb 14, 2021

The Combined Momentum MA (Equal-Length EMA/SMA Crossover) indicator identifies trend acceleration and momentum shifts by utilizing a dual-moving average crossover system filtered by a long-term bias.
Usage
The tool is designed to capture significant trending moves, particularly on higher timeframes, by monitoring the relationship between an Exponential Moving Average (EMA) and a Simple Moving Average (SMA) of the same length.
- Bullish Trend (Green): Occurs when the EMA is above the SMA and both are positioned above the Bias SMA. This indicates strong upward momentum in alignment with the broader trend.
- Bearish Trend (Red): Occurs when the EMA is below the SMA and both are positioned below the Bias SMA. This indicates strong downward momentum in alignment with the broader trend.
- Neutral/No Trend (Blue/Yellow): Occurs when the momentum crossover and the overall bias are not in confluence, suggesting a transition phase or a lack of clear directional conviction.
Users can choose to view a single combined line that changes color based on these conditions or display all three moving averages (Momentum EMA, Momentum SMA, and Bias SMA) separately for more detailed analysis.
Details
The script operates on the principle that an EMA responds faster to price changes than an SMA of the same period. By comparing the two, traders can visualize whether momentum is accelerating (EMA pulling away from SMA) or decelerating (EMA returning toward SMA).
To filter out market noise and false signals, the indicator incorporates a "Bias SMA" (typically a longer period, such as 100 or 200). A momentum signal is only considered high-probability when it aligns with this primary trend filter, effectively acting as a trend-following confirmation mechanism.
Settings
- Momentum Length (EMA=SMA): Determines the lookback period for both the EMA and SMA used for the crossover signals.
- Bias SMA Length: Sets the period for the slower SMA that determines the overall market bias.
- Show All MAs Separately: A toggle to switch between a single color-coded momentum line and the individual plot lines for each moving average.
FAQ
How do I use the Combined Momentum MA (Equal-Length EMA/SMA Crossover) for entries?
Entries are typically sought when the indicator turns green (for longs) or red (for shorts), signifying that short-term momentum has crossed in the direction of the long-term bias.
What timeframes work best for this indicator?
While applicable to any timeframe, it is optimized for trend-following on higher timeframes (such as 1H, 4H, or Daily) where moving average crossovers tend to be more reliable.
