Moving Average Zones
Jan 21, 2023

The Moving Average Zones indicator provides a dynamic multi-level support and resistance framework by plotting various moving average offsets to visualize price confluence and potential reversal areas. This tool allows traders to identify significant market zones for stop-loss placement, take-profit targets, and trend exhaustion signals.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to analyze market structure. By default, the indicator plots seven distinct zones calculated from a central moving average. These zones act as dynamic liquidity areas where price action frequently reacts.
- Identifying Support and Resistance: Traders can use the outer zones to identify overextended price conditions, suggesting potential reversals, while inner zones often act as trend-following support or resistance.
- Areas of Confluence (AOC): When enabled, the indicator tracks how many times price has entered a specific zone within the defined Lookback Range. Zones with higher touch counts increase in brightness, signaling a stronger area of confluence.
- Trade Management: The zones can assist in setting technical stop-losses beyond high-confluence areas or determining realistic take-profit targets based on the next major zone.
Details
The indicator constructs its zones by applying Average True Range (ATR) based multipliers to a user-selected moving average. Unlike standard Bollinger Bands which use standard deviation, Moving Average Zones utilize fixed multipliers (ranging from 0.3 to 12.0) to create a tiered visual hierarchy of price levels.
The "Areas of Confluence" logic employs a hit-detection algorithm that monitors if the high or low of a bar penetrates a zone boundary. The script then calculates a relative transparency based on the sum of touches within the Lookback Range, providing a heat-map effect that highlights the most historically relevant levels.
Settings
General Settings
- Zone Color: Sets the base color for all plotted zones.
- Lookback Range: Defines the number of bars back the script analyzes to count price touches within zones.
- MA Type: Selects the calculation method for the central baseline (EMA, SMA, RMA, HMA, WMA, VWMA, ALMA, or SWMA).
- MA Length: The lookback period used for the moving average and ATR calculation.
- MA Source: The price data point used for calculations (e.g., Close, HL2).
- MA Offset/Sigma: Specific parameters used only when the ALMA type is selected.
Areas of Confluence (AOC)
- Areas of Confluence: Toggles the heat-map visual style based on touch frequency.
- Display Zero-Touch Zones: Determines if zones with no recent touches remain visible or are hidden.
- Extend Plot Levels: Extends the zone boundaries to the right side of the chart for better visibility of current levels.
- Display Touch Count: Toggles labels on the right axis that show the specific number of touches each zone has received.
Data Window
- Display Data Window: Enables an on-screen table summarizing the current MA settings and total touch statistics.
FAQ
How do I change the sensitivity of the zones?
You can adjust the MA Length to change the reactivity of the baseline or modify the Lookback Range to alter how quickly the Areas of Confluence visual updates based on recent price action.
What does a brighter zone indicate?
A brighter zone indicates a higher concentration of price touches within the specified Lookback Range, representing a zone with higher historical confluence.
How can I access the Moving Average Zones?
