Zero Lag Multi Timeframe MACD
May 26, 2025

The Zero Lag Multi Timeframe MACD indicator provides real-time projections of higher timeframe MACD values onto a lower timeframe chart, eliminating the standard delay associated with multi-timeframe analysis. By utilizing a time-adjusted formula, it allows traders to perform top-down analysis on a single chart without waiting for higher timeframe candles to close.
Usage
The indicator can be used to identify trend alignment between two different timeframes simultaneously. It plots both a Lower Timeframe (LTF) MACD and a Higher Timeframe (HTF) MACD, each with its own signal line and histogram.
- Trend Confirmation: A strong bullish setup occurs when both the HTF and LTF MACD lines are rising and above the zero line. Conversely, a strong bearish setup is identified when both are falling and below zero.
- Entries: Traders often look for the LTF MACD to cross above its signal line when the HTF MACD confirms a dominant bullish trend.
- Divergence Analysis: If the LTF and HTF MACD lines move in opposite directions while their histograms are shrinking, it may indicate trend exhaustion or a lack of clear momentum.
- Visual Aids: Users can enable a heads-up display table or labels to track whether the MACD lines are currently rising or falling over a specific lookback period.
Details
Traditional multi-timeframe indicators typically use security calls that only update once a higher timeframe bar closes. For example, viewing a 1-hour MACD on a 5-minute chart usually results in a stepped plot that updates every 12 bars. This tool uses a custom calculation to project these higher timeframe values bar-by-bar, providing a "zero lag" experience.
Note that while the current timeframe MACD supports both Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) and Simple Moving Averages (SMA), the higher timeframe calculation is restricted to SMA due to the nature of the time-adjusted weighting required for real-time projection.
Settings
High Timeframe Settings
- Current TF (min): The timeframe of your current active chart in minutes.
- Higher TF (min): The target higher timeframe you wish to project onto the chart.
- Use EMA for Current TF: Toggle between EMA and SMA for the local timeframe calculations.
MACD Settings
- Fast Moving Average: The period for the fast length (default is 12).
- Slow Moving Average: The period for the slow length (default is 26).
- Signal Moving Average: The period for the signal line (default is 9).
Color Settings
- Current/HTF MACD Color Settings: Customize the visibility, color, and width of the MACD and Signal lines for both timeframes.
- LTF/HTF Histogram Colors: Adjust colors for bullish, bearish, and weak momentum states for both histograms.
Heads Up Information
- Trend Lookback Bars: The number of bars used to determine if the MACD is "rising" or "falling" for labels and tables.
- Show Table Information: Displays a dashboard in the top-right corner showing trend status.
- Show LTF / HTF Position Label: Adds labels directly to the plots indicating current trend direction.
FAQ
How do I interpret the HTF MACD?
The HTF MACD represents the dominant trend from a larger perspective. When it aligns with your local chart's MACD, it suggests higher probability trend-following opportunities.
Why does the HTF MACD only use SMA?
The mathematical projection used to eliminate lag relies on specific weighting that is compatible with Simple Moving Averages to ensure the values remain accurate across different bar counts.
