The Price Action Index indicator is a specialized oscillator designed to distinguish between actionable price movements and market noise by combining price direction with volatility strength. It provides traders with a clear visual representation of when a market is trending, consolidating, or reaching potential exhaustion points.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on interpreting the oscillator's position and color-coded signals to make informed trading decisions.

  • Market Consolidation (Straddle Area): When the indicator is within the "Straddle Area" (typically near zero and colored purple), the market is in a squeeze or chop. Traders may avoid directional bets and instead look for range-bound strategies or wait for a breakout.
  • Bullish Momentum: A rising indicator moving above the straddle area signals a bullish trend. When the value approaches the upper extreme (80 to 100), the market is considered overbought, suggesting profit-taking or looking for bearish reversal setups.
  • Bearish Momentum: A falling indicator moving below the straddle area signals a bearish trend. Values approaching the lower extreme (-80 to -100) indicate oversold conditions, which can serve as a contrarian signal to look for long entries.
  • Divergences: The script automatically plots regular and hidden bullish/bearish divergences to highlight potential reversals or trend continuations.

Details

The Price Action Index operates by multiplying two distinct components to create its final output:

  1. Price Direction: Price is converted into a signal between -1.0 (bottom of the range) and 1.0 (top of the range) using a smoothed stochastic calculation.
  2. Dispersion/Volatility: A chosen dispersion method (like Standard Deviation) is converted into a stochastic signal between 0 and 100, representing the relative strength of the move.

By multiplying these, the indicator identifies high-strength trends (e.g., price at highs with maximum deviation equals a high positive value) while filtering out low-volatility drifts (e.g., price at highs with tiny deviation equals a low value).

Settings

Time Frame

  • Higher Timeframe Selection: Allows the indicator to calculate based on a timeframe different from the current chart (None, Auto-Steps, Multiple, or Fixed).
  • Repaint HTF: Determines if the higher timeframe data should update in real-time or wait for the bar to close.

Inputs

  • Source: The price data used for calculations (default is Close).
  • Stochastic: The lookback length and smoothing for the price direction component.
  • Dispersion: A dropdown to select the mathematical method for measuring volatility (Standard Deviation, Variance, Efficiency, etc.) and its lookback length.

Outputs & Alerts

  • Straddle Area: Defines the threshold for the consolidation zone.
  • Use Bar Colors: When enabled, paints the chart bars to match the indicator's state.
  • Use Alerts: Enables alerts for breakouts from the straddle area or reaching extreme overbought/oversold levels.

Divergence Indicator

  • Pivot Lookback: Adjusts the left and right strength for identifying pivot points.
  • Max/Min Lookback Range: Filters the distance between pivots for divergence detection.
  • Plot Toggles: Allows users to show or hide specific divergence types (Regular or Hidden).

FAQ

How do I interpret the purple zone in the middle?

The purple zone represents the "Straddle Area," which signifies low volatility and price consolidation. It is generally a signal to stay neutral or expect a breakout.

What is the difference between the different Dispersion methods?

The dispersion methods change how the indicator measures market "strength." For example, Standard Deviation measures price spread from the mean, while Efficiency measures the ratio of price movement to total volatility.
