The MACD Moving Average Convergence/Divergence - Durbtrade indicator provides a visually enhanced momentum oscillator that utilizes directional color-coding and background highlights to clearly identify trend shifts and crossovers.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to interpret market momentum and trend changes. This tool is primarily used to identify trend direction, momentum strength, and potential reversal points through the following features:

  • Directional MACD Line: The MACD line changes color dynamically based on its slope. A green line indicates upward vertical movement, while a red line indicates downward movement, allowing for immediate recognition of momentum shifts even on smaller timeframes or screens.
  • Crossover Highlights: The indicator automatically colors the background when the MACD line crosses above or below the Signal line. A green background signifies a bullish crossover (MACD > Signal), while a red background signifies a bearish crossover (MACD < Signal).
  • Histogram Analysis: The histogram displays the difference between the MACD and Signal lines. It uses four colors to distinguish between increasing/decreasing momentum in both bullish and bearish territories.
  • Visual Fills: An area fill between the MACD and Signal lines provides a clearer view of the spread between the two averages, assisting in the visualization of convergence and divergence.

Details

The indicator is constructed based on standard MACD principles but includes modifications for enhanced visual clarity. It calculates the difference between a Fast Moving Average and a Slow Moving Average to derive the MACD line. A Signal line is then calculated as an average of the MACD line itself.

The directional color logic for the MACD line is determined by comparing the current MACD value to its previous value (macdLine[1]). The zero line is plotted with an offset to keep the chart clean, ensuring it does not extend unnecessarily into the future price space. Furthermore, the script includes logic for "Zero Filling," which highlights the relationship between the MACD, Signal, and the zero threshold.

Settings

  • Fast Length: Determines the period for the shorter-term moving average (default is 12).
  • Slow Length: Determines the period for the longer-term moving average (default is 26).
  • Source: Sets the price data used for calculations (default is Close).
  • Signal Smoothing: Adjusts the period for the Signal line moving average (default is 9).
  • Simple MA (Oscillator): If enabled, uses Simple Moving Averages (SMA) instead of Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) for the MACD calculation.
  • Simple MA (Signal Line): If enabled, uses a Simple Moving Average for the Signal line smoothing.

FAQ

How do I interpret the background colors? Green background fills indicate a bullish crossover where the MACD line has moved above the Signal line, while red background fills indicate a bearish crossover where the MACD has moved below the Signal line.

What does it mean when the MACD line changes color? The color change is based on the direction of the slope. If the MACD line is rising, it turns green; if it is falling, it turns red. This is independent of whether the line is above or below zero.
