Bollinger Bands OBV
Mar 28, 2021

The Bollinger Bands OBV indicator combines On-Balance Volume (OBV) with Bollinger Bands to help traders identify volume-driven momentum shifts and potential support/resistance levels within market cycles.
Usage
The Bollinger Bands OBV is primarily used to assess the strength of price movements by analyzing volume flow. When the OBV line crosses above the upper Bollinger Band, it suggests strong bullish volume momentum, often indicating an overextended or breakout phase. Conversely, when the OBV line crosses below the lower band, it suggests significant bearish volume pressure.
Traders can use these extremes to identify potential exhaustion points or trend continuations. On lower timeframes, increasing the length setting can help filter out market noise and provide a smoother representation of the volume trend.
Details
The script calculates On-Balance Volume (OBV), which is a cumulative total of volume based on whether the price closed higher or lower than the previous period. It then applies the standard Bollinger Band calculation—consisting of a Simple Moving Average (Basis) and two Standard Deviation lines—directly to the OBV data rather than price. This allows for a relative analysis of volume volatility and trend deviations.
Settings
- Length: Determines the lookback period for the Simple Moving Average and the Standard Deviation calculation.
- StdDev: Sets the multiplier for the Standard Deviation, which controls the width of the bands.
- Offset: Shifts the Bollinger Bands and OBV plot forward or backward on the horizontal axis.
