The Awesome Oscillator and MACD Histogram indicator combines two popular momentum oscillators into a single visual tool to help traders identify trend direction, momentum shifts, and potential reversals.

Usage

The indicator displays the Awesome Oscillator (AO) and the MACD Histogram as area plots, accompanied by the standard MACD and Signal lines. Traders can use the interaction between these components to gauge market sentiment:

  • Trend Identification: When the MACD Histogram (green/red area) is overlaid with the Awesome Oscillator (blue/yellow area), it can signify a strong trend. For example, a green MACD area over a blue AO area suggests a sustained uptrend.
  • Reversal Signals: Potential reversals are often identified when colors shift or when one area plot begins to move atop the other. A yellow AO area appearing over a red MACD histogram may indicate a downside reversal is possible.
  • Crossovers: Standard MACD and Signal line crossovers behave normally, providing traditional entry and exit signals.

Details

This tool calculates the Awesome Oscillator by subtracting a 34-period Simple Moving Average (SMA) from a 5-period SMA of the median price (HL2). Simultaneously, it calculates the MACD by subtracting a 26-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA) from a 12-period EMA. The visual implementation uses area plots to provide a more intuitive look at momentum strength compared to standard histogram bars. Note that the MACD values are scaled by a factor of 10 in the visual output to better align with the Awesome Oscillator's scale.

Settings

  • AO Fast SMA Length: Sets the fast period for the Awesome Oscillator calculation (default is 5).
  • AO Slow SMA Length: Sets the slow period for the Awesome Oscillator calculation (default is 34).
  • MACD Fast EMA Length: Sets the fast period for the MACD line calculation (default is 12).
  • MACD Slow EMA Length: Sets the slow period for the MACD line calculation (default is 26).
  • MACD Signal EMA Length: Sets the smoothing period for the MACD Signal line (default is 9).

FAQ

How do I interpret the area plots?

The area plots represent the momentum of the Awesome Oscillator and the MACD Histogram. When both are rising and colored bullishly, it indicates strong upward momentum. When they conflict, it may suggest a weakening trend or a range-bound market.

What do the alerts notify me about?

The script includes built-in alerts for MACD line crossovers/crossunders with the Signal line, as well as Awesome Oscillator zero-line crosses, allowing you to stay informed of momentum shifts without constantly watching the chart.
