The Session VWAP + StdDev Bands indicator provides an anchored Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) system that resets based on user-defined higher timeframes, featuring dynamic standard deviation bands with integrated retest tracking and volume analysis. It serves as a comprehensive tool for identifying institutional-grade value areas and contested price levels within a specific trading session.

Usage

The indicator can be applied to various trading styles by adjusting the reset timeframe. For intraday traders, a "Daily" reset provides the standard VWAP context, while "Weekly" or "Monthly" resets offer macro-level value area mapping for swing traders.

Main features include:

  • Dynamic Heatmap: Each of the seven lines (VWAP and six bands) tracks how many times price has crossed it. The more a level is tested, the more opaque and visually prominent the line becomes.
  • Volume Tracking: The tool monitors cumulative volume at every level. Edge labels display the total volume that has flowed through a specific band during the current session.
  • Band Touch Signals: Responsive diamond shapes appear when price wicks into a band. Blue diamonds indicate potential support reactions (bullish), while orange diamonds signify potential resistance reactions (bearish).
  • Breakout Confirmation: Traders can look for price closing outside the 2σ or 3σ bands. If the band color intensifies and holds as support/resistance on subsequent retests, it may signal a high-probability trend continuation.

Details

This tool utilizes an anchored reset logic triggered by higher timeframe bar closes rather than simple rolling windows. The standard deviation bands are calculated using a volume-weighted variance formula, ensuring the bands expand and contract based on the dispersion of price relative to volume. This provides a more accurate representation of market volatility than ATR or simple price-based standard deviation.

The retest memory system increments on every close-based cross, reducing the line's transparency by 10 points per hit. After 10 retests, a line reaches full opacity, creating a visual hierarchy of the most significant price levels in the current session.

Settings

Session

  • Higher Timeframe: Determines the anchor point where the VWAP and all calculations reset (e.g., Daily, Weekly, Monthly).
  • Source: The price input used for calculations, defaulting to HLC3.

Bands

  • Band Multipliers (1-3): Sets the standard deviation distance for the three pairs of bands from the VWAP.

Visibility

  • Band Toggles: Enable or disable the visibility of specific standard deviation bands and customize their colors.
  • Show Band Retest Signals: Toggles the diamond shapes that appear on price wicks.
  • Retest Signal Cooldown (Bars): Sets the minimum number of bars required between identical signals to prevent clutter.
  • Label Size: Adjusts the size of the edge labels (Tiny to Huge).

FAQ

How do I interpret the different line intensities?

Brighter, more solid lines indicate levels that have been tested multiple times during the current session. These levels often represent significant volume nodes where high market activity has occurred.

What do the edge labels signify?

The labels display the band name, the total number of retests, and the cumulative volume associated with those retests, providing context on the strength of a price level.
